Is your dog actually listening to your voice… or just guessing what gets him paid?

Samson knows all of these behaviors, but when I put several options in the same area, you can see him start guessing.

“Place” → crate.
“Crate” → box.

Instead of rushing in and fixing every mistake, I let him slow down, work through the frustration, and actually listen to the command being given.

Sometimes better obedience isn’t about teaching another command — it’s teaching the dog to slow down and listen.

Our first outdoor track exposed a problem.

Delilah followed the trail and worked her way to the right area, but once she got there she passed the source several times before finally giving me the indication I wanted.

The last part of this video is me breaking down what I think is going wrong, what we’re struggling with, and what I plan to change next.

This is the part of training I want to document too — not just the wins, but how we work through the problems.

Before Delilah can run the track, somebody has to lay it.

In this part, I’m showing how we set up her first outdoor track, place the human-scented article at the end, and create the trail she’ll have to work.

The setup matters just as much as the search.

Then it’s time to go get Delilah.

Now that Delilah understood the indication, it was time to add distance.

I laid a short, straight track with the human-scented washer at the end, brought her to the start, gave her the search command, and let her work it out.

This is where the separate pieces start coming together into an actual search.

The next step was making sure Delilah understood what she was actually indicating on.

We removed the box, kept the bowl and human-scented washer, then progressed to just the washer while keeping the picture familiar.

The goal was simple: make the source of human odor the thing that mattered — not the equipment around it.

We started Delilah’s Search & Rescue training at the finish line.

Using back chaining, I first taught her exactly what I wanted her to do when she found the source: lay down and put her nose directly on it.

Once that final indication was clear, we could start building everything else backward from there.

🐾 WEEKLY DOG SPOTLIGHT — MILLIE MAE

Millie Mae started training with me on June 1, 2024, at around a year old, and she was my first 6-week Board & Train client outside of my own personal dogs.

She was smart, energetic, and playful — but reliability was the problem. She pulled badly on leash, ignored commands when she felt like it, and her previous training just hadn’t held up consistently.

Her family wanted to be able to take her everywhere with them and needed a very high level of obedience in public.

Millie Mae was an incredibly quick learner. After just a few repetitions, she usually understood exactly what I was asking. Over six weeks, we focused on turning that understanding into reliable obedience around real-world distractions.

By the end, she was still the same fun, energetic dog — she just had the control to go with it.

One of my favorite memories was teaching her place while my son climbed up beside her and copied everything she did. 😂 My kids have always been involved in the training, and moments like that make certain dogs especially memorable.

I still check in with her family from time to time, and she’s doing great. They take her on off-leash walks every evening and bring her along to places like Rural King.

That’s the goal: not just a trained dog, but a dog the family can confidently enjoy life with.

Good girl, Millie Mae. You’ll always be an important part of the Family Favorite Canine story. ❤️🐾
