🩸 Why does my healthy pet need bloodwork?

Preventive bloodwork isn’t just for when your pet is sick! Routine blood testing gives your veterinary team a look at what’s happening inside your pet’s body, even when everything seems perfectly normal on the outside. 🐶🐱

🔬 What can bloodwork tell us?
Depending on the tests performed, bloodwork can provide valuable information about your pet’s:

❤️ Red and white blood cells & platelets
🫘 Kidney function
🫀 Liver function
🍬 Blood sugar
⚡ Electrolytes
💧 Hydration status
…and more!

Why is preventive bloodwork important?

Pets can’t tell us when something feels different, and some health conditions may not cause noticeable symptoms until they have progressed. Routine bloodwork can help establish your pet’s individual baseline and allow your veterinarian to identify changes over time.

Finding abnormalities early may mean earlier intervention, more treatment options, and better long-term management.

Preventive bloodwork is especially valuable as pets get older, but establishing a baseline while they’re young and healthy can be helpful too. 🐾

Think of it as another piece of the preventive-care puzzle — alongside regular exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, dental care, and a healthy lifestyle.

📞 Ask us at your pet’s next wellness visit whether preventive bloodwork is recommended for them!

Our team loaded up their plates with chips, queso, and all the fixings — because apparently FVC is slowly becoming a restaurant that occasionally sees pets. 🤷‍♀️🐾

Today was also about representing the people and pets we’re proud to serve in our community. ❤️

From the neighbors who trust us with their four-legged family members to the pets who keep us on our toes every day, we’re incredibly lucky to be part of this community.

Thanks for dining with us this week — the FVC Diner and FVC Cantina are now officially closed. Management has been advised to return to their regularly scheduled jobs (until next week when we celebrate our amazing Vet Techs! 🤫). 🐾

“Welcome to the FVC Diner, what can I get you today?” ☕️😂

For today’s Team Appreciation Week celebration, we combined Sports Jersey Day with the grand opening (and possibly grand closing 🤣) of the FVC Diner! 🏈🏀⚾️

Our Practice Manager and Assistant Practice Manager traded management duties for short-order cook duties and served up fresh waffles, made-to-order omelettes, and a full breakfast bar for the team! 👩‍🍳🍳

Thanks for stopping by the FVC Diner — please don’t ask what time we open tomorrow.

🚨 KENNEL COUGH: What Pet Parents Should Know! 🐶

Is your pup suddenly making a loud, hacking or “honking” cough? It could be kennel cough!

🦠 How do they get it?
Kennel cough is highly contagious and can spread through coughing, sneezing, direct contact, and contaminated bowls, toys, or surfaces. Dogs are especially at risk in places like boarding facilities, daycare, grooming salons, dog parks, and other areas where dogs gather.

🔎 Common signs:
• Dry, persistent cough
• Gagging or retching
• Sneezing or runny nose
• Decreased energy or appetite

💊 Treatment:
Many healthy dogs recover with rest and supportive care, but some may need medications or additional treatment from their veterinarian.

🛡️ Prevention:
The Bordetella vaccine can help reduce the risk and severity of kennel cough. However, because multiple viruses and bacteria can cause respiratory illness, vaccination does not guarantee complete protection.

❤️ Is your dog coughing? Give us a call before coming in so we can help keep your pup and our other patients safe!
