This National Veterinary Technician Week, we're celebrating the incredible Associates who make our hospitals thrive — like Karen, who began as a CSR and never stopped growing and like Joanne, who sought mentorship and support to obtain her VTNE.

At VCA, we're proud to champion our veterinary technicians every step of the way — offering mentorship, encouragement, and the resources to help you reach your full potential.

To every vet tech in our VCA family: thank you. What you do matters deeply — to our teams, to our patients, and to the pet owners who trust us with their most beloved companions.

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

Do you notice your pet trembling, pacing or restlessness, hiding, having a change in appetite, or even odd behavior that can become destructive when there are fireworks? Dogs can hear up to 45,000-65,000 Hz, while humans can only hear up to 20,000 Hz. Because their hearing is much more sensitive than ours, the loud sounds and flashes of light cause severe sensory overload.

Fireworks, as well as thunderstorms, trigger a fight-or-flight response in our pets. Many pets will resort to the flight response, which explains why there is an increase in the number of pets that run away during these type of events. If your pet has exhibited any of the mentioned signs of anxiety during fireworks or even thunderstorms, contact us to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. There are effective prescription options for situational anxiety. If your pet's anxiety is severe (attempts to escape, self-injury, prolonged distress, or worsening over time), it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to discuss possible options. Book online at vcahospitals.com/lantern-road or call 317-841-3403.

Our pets cannot tell us if they are scared, but they can show us. What can we do to help put them at ease?
