Try holding a llama or alpaca tightly for an injection, toenail trim or another healthcare task, and you will often get an animal that fights to get away.

Put yourself in their shoes.

Imagine going to the doctor for a vaccine or to have blood taken. Would you feel calmer if a nurse strapped you to a chair with ropes or bars, or held your arms and body still by force?

Your heart rate would go up. You would probably want to get out of that chair.

Our camelids are no different. When we take away their ability to move and escape, we can increase their anxiety and trigger a fight response.

In CAMELIDynamics, we use containment instead of restraint. We learn to work with balance, positioning and the animal’s escape route, and to set things up so our camelids can cooperate without feeling trapped or overpowered.

Good handling means understanding how camelids respond and working with them in ways that make cooperation easier.

Yes!

So much of CAMELIDynamics begins with this question:

Does this animal feel safe?

Until your alpaca or llama feels some sense of safety, he will have a difficult, if not impossible, time learning or focusing.

Giving an animal an escape route might seem counterintuitive when you need to approach, halter or handle them. But taking away the feeling of being trapped can change the entire conversation.

Thank you Steven's Animal Sanctuary for adopting these three boys: Bo, Moe and Huckleberry!
They should be great companions for Amigo and have an amazing life at your sanctuary.
