House Rabbit Rescue of Missouri: St. Louis

House Rabbit Rescue of Missouri: St. Louis Dedicated to the rescue, adoption, and education regarding the care of abandoned domestic rabbits. Rabbits are no exception. Adoption; The best part!
(362)

Our mission is to rescue domestic rabbits turned loose and abandoned by their owners, take in rabbits from animal controls and shelters when their "time is up," and provide health care, spay or neuter, good care, healthy diet socialization and more. Then we adopt them out as happy and healthy fur-ever family members to qualified homes plus educate our adopters and the general population regarding

good rabbit care. Rescue; We work with the general public and proper law enforcement to rescue domestic rabbits abandoned to the wild. Many people dump their pets if they choose to not care for them anymore. Easter is a hot time for rabbit dumps and that is when MOHRS is on the scene. Out team safely and legally catches the scared rabbits and properly treats them for any parasites, injuries, or pain they may be experiencing plus having them spayed or neutered and vaccinated for RHDV2. Volunteers work everyday with socializing and getting to know each rabbit where a perfect match can be found for any loving family. We post here on Facebook, Instagram, PetFinder, and our website with any adoptable bunnies. Education; Our extensive bunny 101 class will teach you any and everything there is to know about the care and keeping of your future fur-ever family member. From the basic necessities to keeping your bunny happy to what to do when your have a rabbit in crisis, it has it all. Plus, we love to educate on our social media platforms and hear from owners with their own tips and tricks. Volunteering; We always need help when it comes to the care of The Bunny House and its 150+ residents. Basic tasks including feeding, cleaning, and grooming but the projects go on and on. If you are interested, email us at [email protected] or message us here on Facebook!

Easter and Spring bring numerous requests every year for bunnies to be part of an event and that's on top of our own activities. This year was no different. These are a few of the events we attended and did and there are more to come. Our bunnies are always accompanied by our volunteers.

Photos include Delmar Gardens senior home, Cheshire Grin Cat Cafe and rescue, the Methodist church in Chesterfield, the Fenton Chamber of Commerce Annual Easter Egg Hunt held at T.A.S.K., and our own Bunny Visit at our shelter. These do not encompass all of the events. We only wish we could accommodate more.

Our header of "Community" for the photos is due to the fact that these events are helping others in our community. We could also do our "Education" header as we do provide some for those who ask. We could use the header "Ambassador Bunnies" because only those bunnies who are capable of handling being at these activities go with us. And we could use "Oh, What Fun!" because we have as much fun as the people who attend. We truly do love being part of the community.

Stay tuned for our bunnies at the Missouri Botanical Gardens and MO HRR at the annual Humane Day in Jefferson City.

What's up next? SPRING BUNNY VISIT!

We have a few spots left for our annual spring event for children (although some adults come for it, too.)

THIS SUNDAY, March 29. Visits only by appointment. A visit time spot can be purchased for just $5 per child on our website at https://www.morabbit.org/store-1

Visits include a photo with a live bunny (photos taken by you with your camera,) a tour through our main bunny area where the child can give out some bunny treats, and time to sit on the couch with a bunny in our Meet N Greet Room plus a bunny ornament to take home.

Rabbits are the third most abandoned pet in the U.S. Have fun with a bunny during our Bunny Visit. Please don't buy a bunny. Rabbits are a 10-12 year commitment. They are high maintenance. They are wonderful, but it must be an adult who wants them and will be their caregivers throughout their lives. Thank you!

His name is Trooper... and his story breaks our hearts 💔

This sweet boy was left completely alone when his family moved out of their apartment and never looked back. Abandoned in a tiny cage with nothing but a bowl of unhealthy pellets, no hay, barely any water, and nowhere to hop or stretch. 😢

The property owner found him and reached out to us. Trooper arrived very overweight from the poor diet, dehydrated and confused.

But Trooper is a fighter. He's safe with us now, getting proper hay (the foundation of every bunny's diet!), healthier food in appropriate portions, a much larger space to explore, and all the gentle love he deserves. His healing journey has just begun, and we can't wait to watch this chunky little guy transform into the happy, healthy bun he's meant to be. 🐰✨

If you're local and ready to open your heart and home, you can meet Trooper at our trivia night on Saturday, March 14.

When you work with rescued animals it's not uncommon to have animals that are terrified of humans. Hands sometimes have done terrible things to them and a hand coming towards them is terrifying.

Our Socialization Team works with many frightened or defensive animals and reaching out to them in a way that will work for them means understanding their personality and being creative.

Morticia came to us truly terrified of hands. We came to know that she has a very gentle soul. We don't just recommend sticking your face into just any animal's face, but rabbits do communicate face to face so if the right temperament is there, we can do the same.

Because Morticia was still too frightened to approach her and get close to her face to face, our Socialization Team Supervisor took to using a treat in her mouth to lure Morticia to her. Starting with just waiting at the open door to Morticia's house, her patience paid off. Sure enough, it worked. After Morticia learned she was safe getting a treat this way from one person, she learned that others would not reach out to touch her with their hands, but would give her a treat the same way so she learned to approach others even when she was loose for exercising. Gradually, she is learning to relax and know that she won't be harmed.

Here she is enjoying getting a treat from two other volunteers on our Socialization Team and then totally sprawling and relaxing.

Morticia has recently been shaved for her spay and we are working on the possibility of a dewlap reduction for her. Female rabbits, when not spayed, can develop enormous dewlaps as they age to the point where they can hinder comfort. At MO HRR we do whatever we can to help the rabbits in our care be happy and healthy.
