Anyone missing this gorgeous kitty? Found near 118th and 51st in Fennville. Very friendly, pulled a couple ticks off him and have been feeding him.

Update: Still trying to find an owner but he has been brought inside. I didn't want him stuck in the rain.

State Veterinarian Issues Statement on Air Quality and Animal Health
Poor air quality affects animals; know the signs of illness and protect them

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan’s State Veterinarian released the following statement in response to the ongoing statewide air quality alert:

“Animals react to poor air conditions much like humans do, and certain groups—such as birds, young or older animals, and those with heart or respiratory issues—face higher risks during air quality alerts,” said State Veterinarian, Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “MDARD urges owners to monitor their animals for signs of coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, watery eyes, low energy, changes in how they sound, reduced appetite and reduced thirst. If you see anything concerning, contact your veterinarian.”

Follow these tips to protect your animals from poor air quality:

Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors. Although walking or running with your pets is typically beneficial, it is not recommended when air quality is poor due to elevated particle levels.
Limit the amount of time animals spend outdoors. Only allow animals outside when necessary. Provide indoor spaces for your pets until the air quality alert is lifted.
Keep doors and windows closed. Use fans or air conditioning units with air filters to promote clean air flow and replace filters regularly. Air purifiers can help reduce any particles that come indoors.

As promised from yesterday, here is the playlist that we thought we would share with you to help drown out the fireworks noise this weekend. This was put together by a vet named Dr. Sally Foote for her own dog. Here are some of her recommendations that we would like to share.-
Use the Thunder Ease collar (we have at Mac's) for your dog to wear starting the day before the fireworks start. For cats, apply the Feliway Classic spray (we have at Mac's) to the neck, chest and face area for at least 1 day before fireworks start. Also, spray it on the closet or carrier you will be training your cat to go into for a safe area.

For the pet with higher needs, add medication to the pheromone products.

Safe Room Training: Every day before the Fourth of July (or a holiday with fireworks), take your dog’s meal and have them follow a treat trail into the bathroom or closet. Then keep tossing food into the area for them to sniff and find. This is training them to go into the room, associate it with safe memories, and want to stay in there. Toss cat treats into your cat’s carrier, in the bathroom to train them.
Play my “Butterscotch’s Thunderstorm Playlist”: Dogs and cats need to hear music that has rhythm, deep in the base tones and at a rate of 120-130 beats per minute. In short, disco or salsa type music. Play this in the safe room during fireworks.

Freeze canned food into a Kong food puzzle toy for your dog or cat to enjoy while they are in the safe room, listening to the music and staying calm(er).

After the fireworks, let your pet come out when they want to (not when you want them to). Do not pet your cat much for a few hours. Petting is stimulating for many cats so avoid this. For dogs, keep the walks short as people usually are still setting off fireworks or firecrackers. Wait until the morning for longer walks or play.

Good morning Facebook, believe it or not 4th of July is this week. Please check your pet's meds and plan ahead as we will be closed this Friday, July 3rd. This weekend can be stressful for your pets, so we recommend being prepared with keeping everyone indoors, make sure everyone is wearing identification and checking microchip info. Did you know more pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year? Staying away from human foods to prevent GI upset! Create a safe space in your home during the fireworks, stay tuned tomorrow for a play list that has the perfect rhythm to help drown out the noise. We wish everyone a happy and safe holiday!
