I want to take a moment to shout out my behavioral cases.

They don’t get diplomas per se, because when you have a reactive dog you ALWAYS have a reactive dog, and training is never really “done”.

There is just a time when training is handed over from the professional to the family/owner with instructions on how to move forward.

These puppers are no less Martin Mutts pack members though; they just have a more continuous journey.

I became a trainer because of my own reactive dog, Butler, and I see him in each of these dogs, which makes me strive to teach PURELY POSITIVE techniques in order to curb some of those worrisome and unwanted behaviors.

The journey is uphill, but there’s a reason so many people venture out to climb Everest every year.

Kudos to these owners for reaching out and putting in the work!!!

PSSSST… can I tell you a secret?? 🤫

While I am certainly you and your pupper’s FAVORITE TRAINER, I am not necessarily your pup’s favorite person.

Your dog listens to and is excited to see me because of a few distinct factors:
-They don’t see me everyday
-I am very liberal with treats
-I am very clear with my standards and communication

Do you know which one of those makes the biggest impact??

No matter how much your doggo likes treats or how hungry they are, the thing that affects our relationship most directly is that they know exactly what needs to be done in order to achieve their goal (the treats!)

I maintain my composure and expectations which clearly communicates with them what needs to be done. That surety builds and makes it so that each session we can move forward instead of having to start at square one every time.

The mistake most owners make (and I am not exempt when it comes to my own pups) is that we are a little lax. This behavior is rewarded today but ignored tomorrow, that behavior is punished this time but rewarded next time. THIS is what confuses dogs and what causes them to act out—because the message isn’t clear so they’re filling in the blanks and making their own rules.

Dogs making their own rules is like a five year old making their own rules—it sounds amazing until it isn’t. Behold; a recipe for an anxious dog.

Let’s work together to get you and your pup on one accord so life is good for all parties involved. Meanwhile, your Favorite Trainer will keep dishing out the goodies!!

Every difficult breed is made more difficult to train by your choice to get a female over a male 🥲

I will say, however, the work is worth it because the bond you form is much more intimate than with a male.

But understand; she is smart, she is stubborn, and she knows more than you 😆😆

Do you know what’s one of the most heartbreaking things for me as I work in rescue?

An adult dog that has no grasp of the MERE basics (sit, come), but will flinch every time you move your hand.

So you mean to tell me that all you taught this dog was pain and punishment?

There’s a reason I am purely positive. We can change behavior without leaving mental, physical, and emotional scars that these dogs can carry for a lifetime.

This is Zoey. She graduated Tuesday; she knows her basics and is available at Fayetteville Animal Protection Society.
She’s sweet and loves everyone—even kids!

The love I have for this guy!! 🥰🥰

Hayes has perfected the art of looking completely unamused at all times 😂 His serious little expression gives off major tough-guy energy, but once he gets comfortable, his goofy personality comes bursting out. Underneath the dramatic RBF is a sweet, affectionate boy who loves being around his people and quickly turns into a total attention seeker once he knows you.

He’s the kind of dog who’s happy to tag along for walks, adventures, lazy weekends, or whatever the day brings. Hayes does well around other dogs, settles in nicely to calmer home environments, and has an easygoing personality that makes him a great fit for lots of different lifestyles. Once you get past the “too cool to care” face, you’ll find a loyal best friend with a silly side that’s impossible not to love 🐾💛

PRO TIP:

Nip “marking” behavior in the bud.
Your puppy doesn’t NEED a corner, tree, or the like in order to potty.
-Even if he’s not yet neutered
-even if he’s not yet… matured
Try and stop the behavior before it starts because while it is instinctual it can also become behavioral, and an issue down the line
