In parts of medieval and early modern Europe, folklore linked cats—especially black cats—with magic and the supernatural. Some people believed they were witches’ “familiars,” supernatural companions that helped perform magical work. Others believed witches could transform into cats themselves.

Quite the reputation for an animal that gets its head stuck in a treat bag. 😂

👀 The Eyes in the Shadows

Those spooky peepers have a scientific explanation! Behind your cat’s retina sits a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. It bounces light back through the retina, giving their eyes another chance to use the available light and helping them see in dim conditions.

When that reflected light catches your eye—or your camera—you get that familiar feline glow. ✨

🔦 Here’s the catch: cats’ eyes don’t produce their own light, and cats can’t see in complete darkness. Even your tiny hallway monster needs a little light to work with!

⛵🐈 How Did Domestic Cats Arrive in the Americas?

This Columbus Day, our veterinary team is sharing a little history about the feline friends we love!

Domestic cats travelled to the Americas aboard European ships, where they helped control mice and rats that threatened food supplies and equipment. Their hunting skills made them valuable shipmates long before they became our sofa companions. 🐾

Archaeologists have found domestic cat remains at early colonial sites in the Caribbean, offering clues about their arrival and spread throughout the Americas. The exact timing of their first arrival is still uncertain!

From catching mice at sea to stalking toy mice in your living room, cats have shared quite a journey with us. We’re happy their story now includes comfy beds, loving families, and veterinary teams dedicated to their care. 💛
