❤️🐾 How Gunnar Became a Therapy Dog 🐾❤️

Gunnar’s gentle, easygoing temperament around children inspired the idea of becoming a therapy dog, but a special encounter at Tractor Supply sealed the deal. He quietly stayed beside a nonverbal teenage boy with autism, allowing him to pet him for as long as he wanted. Seeing the happiness Gunnar brought him was all the encouragement needed to pursue therapy work.

After completing obedience training and his Canine Good Citizen course, Gunnar passed his Pets on Wheels temperament assessment with flying colors!

Today, Gunnar volunteers in schools and other facilities throughout Maryland, bringing comfort, smiles, and companionship to the people he meets. ❤️

Watching him make such a positive difference in the lives of these children has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Gunnar truly has a special gift! 🐶

✂️🥜🐶 WHAT IF WHEN YOU SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR DOG MATTERS JUST AS MUCH AS WHETHER YOU DO IT?

Preventing unwanted litters matters. But is it time to rethink HOW we sterilize dogs? Hormone-sparing procedures, including hysterectomy and vasectomy, can prevent reproduction while preserving natural s*x hormones.

🔬 NEW 2026 PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH

Over 10 years, researchers reviewed records from 56,254 veterinary patients, including 313 dogs with mast cell tumors and 638 tumor-free comparison dogs. The study was accepted for publication in The Veterinary Journal.

🤯 1. TIMING MATTERS!

Dogs spayed or neutered before age 2 had 343% higher odds of a mast cell tumor diagnosis compared with intact dogs. Dogs sterilized after age 2 showed no statistically significant increase.

🐕 2. SIZE MATTERS!

Compared with small dogs, medium dogs had 2.6 times the odds and large dogs 5.2 times the odds.

⚖️ 3. WEIGHT MATTERS!

Overweight dogs had 80% higher odds than dogs at an ideal weight.

🧬 4. BREED MATTERS!

Compared with mixed-breed dogs, American Pit Bull Terriers had 7.5 times the odds and Boxers 3.9 times. Some breed groups were small.

❤️ 5. WHAT ABOUT SURVIVAL?

Neutering status wasn’t significantly associated with survival after surgery. Tumor grade and size were more important predictors.

🔬 WHY MIGHT HORMONES MATTER?

S*x hormones influence immune function and development. Researchers propose that early hormone removal and changes in luteinizing hormone (LH) may play a role, but this remains unproven.

🐾 THE BIG TAKEAWAY

Preventing unwanted litters doesn’t always mean removing hormone-producing organs. It’s time for individualized conversations with veterinarians about WHEN and HOW we sterilize dogs.

🐾 Molly & Ryder’s puppies have arrived! 🐾

The little ones made their grand entrance on Tuesday, and both Momma and puppies are doing well! ❤️

There are A LOT of puppies in this litter, and let’s just say… sleep has been pretty limited around here! 😂 Molly needs a little extra help caring for her big crew, so I’ve been busy helping her around the clock.

I apologize to everyone who has sent messages or applications recently that I haven’t gotten back to yet. Please know I haven’t forgotten about you! I’m hoping to catch up with everyone next week once I can catch my breath and get a little more sleep. Thank you all for your patience! ❤️

This litter might break TWO records here at Deer Creek Mastiffs — the most puppies in a litter AND the smallest puppy we’ve ever had born here! 👀🐶

We are beyond excited to announce that Cletus × Bonnie puppies are due November 9! ❤️

This litter holds a very special place in our hearts as it will be the FIRST litter at Deer Creek Mastiffs with TWO titled parents! 🏆👑

🏆 Champion CH Bebbanburg Better at Runnin than Robbin

We couldn’t be more proud of these two incredible dogs and what they bring to this pairing! Both parents are genetically health tested — ALL CLEAR — and have OFA certifications, with Bonnie’s hips and elbows currently preliminary.

We are so excited to see what this special combination produces! Beautiful pedigrees, quality conformation, and generations of dedication all coming together in one very special litter. 🐾💛

What a fantastic weekend in West Friendship! ❤️

🏆 Shaggy (Deer Creek’s Mystery Machine), son of Champion Otis and Thea, took home Winners Dog & Best of Winners all 3 days!

🏆 Annie, daughter of our beloved GCH CH Cletus and Mt Meadows Anna Montana at Hug-a-Mug, won Winners Bitch & Best of Opposite two days in a row!

🏆 Lexie, daughter of Champion Otis and Betty, finished strong with Winners Bitch & Best of Opposite on the final day!

This was Shaggy and Lexie’s FIRST AKC conformation show, and they did amazing! 🎉 We received so many compliments on their wonderful temperaments and how well they handled their first time at a show. We couldn’t be prouder! ❤️
