The weather is starting to get cold and it's time to ke your dog's paws from looking like the picture on the left. Here's a homemade balm to help protect their feet from the cold:
Paw Wax
Ingredients:
2T almond oil
2T coconut oil
1T shea butter
1T beeswax
5 drops lavender essential oil
Directions:
In small pot, melt everything (except the lavender essential oil) over low heat. Stir continuously until all is melted and blended. Add lavendar essential oil and stir. Pout into lip balm tubes or tins. Let them cool until hard. Cap and label. Keep away from extreme heat. Use within 1-2 years.

Hi friends! With Thanksgiving coming up next week, I thought I'd wish every a happy and safe holiday season!

Thanksgiving Dinner is a wonderful time of coming together with friends and family. It can also be a time when people can’t resist slipping your dog a little bit of the Thanksgiving Feast from the table or even after dinner while clearing up. There are so many opportunities for your dog to eat something that can make them feel pretty bad or even cause more harm.

Here are some things to remember to keep your dog and or even cat safe during the upcoming holidays.

1. Turkey Skin – On its own, turkey skin can be fatty and hard to digest, but on Thanksgiving it’s particularly bad (just think of the butter, oils and spices rubbed into it). If you must share the turkey with your dog, do peel the skin off and cut the meat up into bite-sized pieces. Also, consider choosing the white meat over the dark for your pooch – it’s a little blander and easier to digest.

2. Cooked Bones – Whether your bird is duck, goose or turkey, do not give the bones to your dog. Any dog cartoon features Fido carrying a bone around in his mouth, but the reality is that a cooked bone is often brittle and sharp pieces can get lodged in your dog’s intestine. Bird bones are hollow and break easily.

3. Gravy/Buttery Side Dishes – This one goes hand-in-hand with the turkey skin. Fatty foods and trimmings can cause Pancreatitis in dogs at worst and diarrhea or vomiting at “best.” Try substituting gravy with a little turkey broth if you really want to give your pup a treat.

4. Aluminum Foil and Plastic Wrap – Dispose of these when you’re done with them. There are two risks here: one, your pet will be licking the fatty substances off the wrappings, and two, swallowing these can cause an intestinal obstruction.

5. Chocolate – Not that we think that you would intentionally feed your dog chocolate (which we all know can be toxic to our canine friends), but since candy is often left out on tables for guests during the holidays, it made the list. Be sure to keep bowls filled with chocolate and other candies out of vision and out of reach of your dog.

6. The Garbage Can - A frustrated pet who can’t get a scrap out of his usually-generous parents may be tempted to dig around the trash bin and find a good number of the items listed above.

7. The Kitchen – Thanksgiving can be the busiest day of the year for the kitchen and you’ll want to keep your pup out of there. With hot dishes being whisked from one counter to the next, there’s a chance a dog that’s under foot could be burned or cut if something were to shatter.

8. Holiday Plants – Sure it’s Thanksgiving, but a good number of people have already decked the halls with holly by this time. Know that Poinsettias, holly berries, mistletoe and Cedar Christmas trees are toxic to dogs.

9. Decorations – Glass ornaments and candles are just begging for trouble. Like the chocolate, keep these out of reach of your dog.

10. Guests Who Mean Well – Educate your less pet-savvy visitors (and hey, maybe even tag them on here) or tell your guests if you don't feed your dog scraps.

Fall is fastly approaching... And with that comes pumpkins! Why not make some dog treats with some extra pumpkins you picked up at the local patch? Did you know that pumpkin can be beneficial to your dog's health?

1: Diarrhea and constipation
Pumpkin offers a solution to both! Canned pumpkin is actually pumpkin in a puree form. Pumpkin is rich in fiber and adding two teaspoons to your dog’s food will aid in digestion.
For the opposite problem pumpkin softens your dog’s stool and can cure an upset stomach or constipation quickly.

2: Furballs
A teaspoon of pumpkin a day over time can prevent furballs.

Also, for any cat owners, the fiber in the pumpkin can move furballs through a cat’s tummy and into the litter box.

3: Urinary Tract Support
The oils that are found in pumpkin seeds and pumpkin flesh support urinary tract health in both dogs and cats.

4: Parasites
Pumpkin seeds also contain an amino acid called cucurbitin, which acts as a natural de-worming agent. Tapeworms and intestinal parasites become paralyzed by cucurbitin. The best way to prepare the seeds is to grind up fresh seeds until they are a powder consistency. Mix a teaspoon of powder into a marble size portion of wet food, three times a day. Store leftover seeds in an airtight container to keep fresh.

5: Skin and Coat
Do you like roasted pumpkin seeds?
Share them with your dog! The antioxidants and essential fatty acids help moisturize your pet’s fur and skin from the inside out. Need a quick recipe?
Lightly coat a baking sheet with cooking oil
Roast at 375 degrees for 5-10 minutes
Cool and serve.
Allow your pet to eat two-three seeds as a daily treat. Yummy! Leftover seeds should be stored in an airtight container.

6: Nutrition
Pumpkin, seeds and its flesh are loaded with Vitamin A, beta-carotene, potassium, iron, copper, zinc and manganese. The antioxidants found in pumpkin are known to prevent some cancer.

****Remember that the amount you add to your animal's food depends on your pet’s size and species (dog or cat). It’s a good idea to reach out to your veterinarian if you have questions about the daily serving amount and frequency.***

Here's an easy recipe that I found online to help you get started in baking up some healthy treats this fall for your furball or even to give as a gift to someone else's furball!
