šŸŽƒHappy National Pumpkin Day!!šŸŽƒ
A couple of years ago, we decided to take a look inside autumn’s favorite gourd using our clinic’s imaging technology! As you can see, digital radiography (X-Ray) gives us a great 2D overview, while a 3D CT scan lets us slice right through to see every seed in incredible detail!

While we have pumpkin on the brain... here is a quick refresher on how to safely share pumpkin with your pets and livestock:

🐶🐱 Dogs & Cats:
Pawsitive Perks: Plain canned pumpkin pureƩ (100% pure pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie mix) is packed with soluble fiber, helping with mild stomach upset and constipation.
Portioning: Small dogs and cats only need 1–2 teaspoons per day; larger dogs can have 1–2 tablespoons mixed into their food.
Avoid: Pumpkin pie filling, spice blends (nutmeg is toxic to pets!), and moldy carved jack-o'-lanterns.

🐓 🐮 Horses & Livestock:
Perks: Plain pumpkin flesh and seeds are safe, high-fiber, vitamin-rich treats!
Preparation: Chop or slice whole pumpkins into manageable pieces to eliminate choking hazards.
Avoid: Painted/glittered pumpkins, candles/wax, or rotting decorative pumpkins.ā“

It's National Veterinary Technician Week!

A veterinary clinic takes a whole team, and our technicians are a HUGE part of what makes ours work. From patient care and lab work to surgery, treatments, monitoring, and all the unexpected things that come up in a day, they're constantly juggling responsibilities and putting our patients first.

Some of their best work happens behind the scenes, where clients may never see it. But we see it. We see the dedication, the teamwork, the problem-solving, the long days, and the compassion they bring to every patient.

To our technicians: thank you for showing up, stepping in, figuring things out, and caring so deeply about the animals who depend on us. You are essential to this clinic, and we are grateful for every single one of you. We couldn't do this without you. Not even close.

Look at what was brought into our clinic today! A thoughtful client recently found this historic piece of Casselton Veterinary Service history tucked away behind a wall in a building they were taking down.
Take a close look at that label… it’s an old brown, glass medicine bottle with hand-written instructions from back when our phone number was simply 672-4800.
Holding this in our hands is such a powerful reminder of how far our clinic, and veterinary medicine as a whole, has come since the day this bottle was sent home with someone.
While the tools, technology, and treatments have changed dramatically over the decades, one thing has remained exactly the same: our deep commitment to caring for the animals in our community. We are so incredibly grateful to our clients who continue to trust us with their animals, then and now.
A huge thank you to the client who saved this from being lost to time and brought it in for us to cherish. We are working on a way to display this in our clinic!

This sweet Saint Bernard puppy is recovering after breaking both of his back legs. Toby was initially treated for his injuries at Red River Animal Emergency Hospital and Referral Center and continues his weekly rechecks there, while he visits our team for his weekly bandage changes as he continues on the road to recovery.

We love being able to work alongside other local veterinary teams to help provide the care our patients need throughout their recovery. It truly takes a village! ā¤ļøšŸ¾

And judging by this photo, Toby is handling it like the very good boy he is.

Our technician, Megan, was helping keep Toby comfortable after getting those bandages changed while he works toward getting back on all four paws. We’re pretty sure the cuddles are part of his treatment plan. 🄰

🚧 Friendly reminder! 🚧
If you’re heading to either of our locations for an appointment, don’t forget to check your route and give yourself a few extra minutes for construction and traffic delays.
Better to arrive a little early than be racing the orange cones! šŸ˜†šŸ§”šŸ¾
Travel safe, and we’ll see you soon!

🚧 Quick heads-up if you have an appointment with us soon! 🚧

Construction season is officially in full swing around the Red River Valley, especially out on I-29, I-94, and the surrounding roads. Whether you're heading to our Casselton or Fargo office, traffic is a bit unpredictable right now.

We highly recommend checking your route before you walk out the door and giving yourself an extra 10–15 minutes.

We know dealing with orange cones isn't how anyone wants to spend their day, so if you’re running behind, please don't stress! Just give us a quick call to let us know. Travel safe, and we'll see you soon! 🧔🐾

🐾 What is it Wednesday? Let’s Talk VCPR! 🐾

Real talk—sometimes we get pushback when we can’t give medical advice about a pet we’ve never met, or haven’t seen in over a year. And we get it—you love your fur baby! ā¤ļø

Here’s the deal: it’s the law. A VCPR (Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship) means your vet needs recent, first-hand knowledge of your pet’s health to safely give advice or treatment. That usually means an exam at least once a year.

Why the strict rules?

šŸ“Every conversation about your pet’s health is documented in their medical record, so we have an accurate history.

šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļøIt ensures safe, informed medical decisions—we can’t treat what we don’t know.

šŸ›”It protects your pet and keeps everyone legally covered.

So, when we say we can’t give guidance, it’s not because we don’t care—it’s because the law and your pet’s safety come first. Plus, yearly check-ups help us catch small issues before they become big problems. 🩺

Your pet’s health = our top priority, and keeping the VCPR current keeps everyone safe and sound. šŸ˜‰

šŸ“… Not sure when your last exam was? Let’s get it on the calendar!

ā€¼ļøMeet Clarissa: A Dedicated Veterinary Technician with a Heart for Animalsā€¼ļø

Clarissa's journey into the world of animal care began in August 2021, when she started working in the boarding and grooming side of the veterinary field. Her passion for animals and commitment to their well-being propelled her to further her education and training, leading her to become a Veterinary Technician in July 2023🩺. With a particular love for Corgis—her own Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Maple—and an appreciation for cats and exotic pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, Clarissa thrives in environments where she can nurture and support creatures of all kinds.

ā€œI find immense joy in helping sick animals regain their health and confidence,ā€ she shares, expressing the fulfillment that comes from her work. Whether it’s comforting a frightened kitten or providing specialized care to an exotic pet, Clarissa’s dedication shines through every day.

When she isn't caring for furry (or scaly!) friends, Clarissa enjoys indulging in arts and crafts, channeling her creativity into various projects. šŸ‘©ā€šŸ³Baking is another of her favorite pastimes, allowing her to share sweet treats with family and friends. Fans of animated comedy will often find her wrapped up in episodes of "Bob’s Burgers," alongside her šŸŽ¬ Netflix and Hulu binge-watching sessions.

Beyond her professional life, Clarissa has a beautiful personal story. With a twenty-year age gap between her and her sister, she relishes the unique bond they share. She is also in the midst of planning her šŸ’wedding for May 2026. One of her most cherished experiences was hiking Horsetooth Mountain with her fiancĆ©, where they were treated to breathtaking views that solidified their love for hiking. ā€œWe definitely want to explore more trails together,ā€ she enthusiastically notes.

As she continues to grow in her career as a Veterinary Technician, Clarissa remains committed to her special interest in working with exotic patients. Her hidden talent of playing the violinšŸŽ» adds a melodic touch to her life, harmonizing beautifully with her love for animals and the adventures that await her.

With her ā¤ļø heart in the right place and her skills growing ever sharper, Clarissa is on her way to making a significant impact in the lives of animals and their owners alike. Whether she’s tending to a beloved pet or venturing out into nature, her journey is one of compassion, adventure, and unyielding dedication to her passions.
