🐾 A Labor Day weekend reminder: Proximity does not always equal an invitation for affection.

Your dog may sit beside you because they enjoy being close and included—not because they want a hug, leaning, or prolonged petting.

When your dog settles next to you, pet them once or twice and then pause:

🐶 If they lean in or nudge you, continue.
🐶 If they remain neutral, turn away, or move, let them relax without petting.

Sometimes dogs simply want to share our space. Respecting that choice helps build trust—and being near you without being touched still counts as quality time. ❤️

Look at this outdoor manners class go! 🐾

In this group crosswalk exercise, four dogs started on one side and three on the other. The groups exchanged places, practicing polite leash manners while walking near other dogs and people.

Outdoor public settings can be unpredictable and distracting, but this class did beautifully! Kudos to their owners for staying engaged, bringing high-value treats, and remaining patient and hardworking as they helped their dogs succeed.

We have another Outdoor Manners class coming up! Visit the Classes page on our website to learn more and enroll.

If you could borrow one of a dog’s senses for just a few hours, which would you choose?

Mine would be their sense of smell! I’m fascinated by their incredible sniffing power and would love to experience the world through a dog’s nose. 🐾👃

What would you choose?

🐾 **This class is for you if…**

• Your dog barks, lunges, pulls, or becomes overly excited when they see other dogs or people on walks.
• You feel stressed, overwhelmed, or embarrassed by your dog’s leash behavior.
• Your dog would struggle to focus in a traditional group class.
• You want practical tools to help make future walks calmer and more enjoyable.
• You’re looking for a supportive, judgment-free place to train.

Our **Over Reactive Rover class** provides a calm, structured environment where you and your dog can learn together. With only four dogs in the class, you’ll receive plenty of individual guidance and hands-on practice.

**Before You Say Hi to a Dog…**

One of the most common mistakes people make when meeting dogs on walks is assuming they enjoy big hugs, having their face held, or someone leaning in for direct eye contact.

While these gestures may feel loving to us, they can feel confrontational, uncomfortable, or even scary to a dog.

When you meet a cute pup:

🐾 Ask the owner before approaching.
🐾 Ask whether their dog enjoys meeting people.
🐾 Find out how and where the dog prefers to be petted.
🐾 Keep the interaction brief and give the dog space to move away.

We may be excited to say hello, but we should always consider how the dog feels about the interaction, too. The kindest greeting is one that helps the dog feel safe and comfortable.

Behavior Has Layers

Dog trainers receive a lot of emails that say:

“My dog lashed out completely out of nowhere.”

“My dog never gave us any warning.”

“My dogs have always gotten along, and suddenly they got into a fight.”

Although a behavior may appear to come out of nowhere, it rarely stands alone. Behavior is multilayered and influenced by everything happening in and around the dog.

Maybe the dog is itchy or uncomfortable. Earlier that day, they almost got into a fight during a walk. The night before, the little girl in the house had a sleepover filled with excited, loud kids.

Each experience adds another layer of stress.

When we sit down with a client, we often look closely at what happened during the 24–48 hours surrounding an incident. We start peeling back the onion to uncover possible triggers, stressors and instigators.

Once we better understand those layers, we can work to reduce or eliminate triggers, lower the dog’s overall stress and create a plan to help change the behavior.

What looks like “out of nowhere” may make much more sense once we start peeling back the layers.
