A lot of unwanted behaviors continue because they work for the dog.

Owners often accidentally reward behaviors without realizing it. Talking to the dog when they bark, petting them when they are anxious, repeating commands over and over, giving attention for jumping, or removing pressure the second the dog fights it can all teach the dog that the behavior was successful.

Dogs repeat what benefits them.

This is why consistency matters so much in training. Every interaction is teaching the dog something, whether we mean to or not. If the dog learns that bad behavior changes the situation in their favor, the behavior usually grows stronger over time.

A lot of bigger behavior problems start as “small things” owners brushed off early on.

Pushing through doorways, ignoring commands, demanding attention, stealing objects, pulling on leash, jumping, guarding space, blowing through boundaries — none of these behaviors seem like a huge deal by themselves. But over time, they create a dog that learns rules are optional and self-control is unnecessary.

Dog training is rarely about one giant moment. It is usually the result of hundreds of small interactions that either build accountability or slowly remove it.

The little things matter because they shape the mindset and habits behind the bigger behaviors people struggle with later.

“My dog listens perfectly at home.”

That is usually because home is predictable, low pressure, and familiar. The real test of training is whether the dog can make the same decisions around distractions, new environments, people, dogs, movement, and stress.

Dogs do not automatically generalize behaviors the way people think they do. Just because your dog understands “sit” in the kitchen does not mean they fully understand it in a pet store, at the park, or when another dog walks by.

This is why proofing matters. Training has to move beyond the house and into real life situations if you want reliability. A dog that can only listen in comfortable environments does not truly understand how to apply the behavior everywhere else.

Dogs are incredibly good at reading people, which means your nervousness, tension, and emotions often travel straight down the leash.

A lot of owners unknowingly change their behavior before their dog even reacts. They tighten the leash, hold their breath, stop moving naturally, stare at the trigger, or mentally prepare for something bad to happen. The dog notices all of it.

To the dog, that pressure can feel like confirmation that something in the environment is a problem. Over time, this can actually build more reactivity, insecurity, or over-arousal because the dog starts anticipating stress before anything even happens.

This does not mean owners are causing the behavior, but handler pressure absolutely affects it. Calm, clear handling and consistent communication can make a huge difference in how a dog responds to the world around them.

“He’s protective of me.”

Most of the time, no he isn’t.

True protection dogs are stable, neutral, clear headed, and highly trained. A dog reacting to strangers, barking at people who come near you, guarding you from guests, or melting down around other dogs is usually not showing protection — it is showing insecurity, over-arousal, possessiveness, or a lack of clarity.

A lot of owners accidentally reinforce these behaviors because it feels flattering or makes them feel safe, but the problem is that the dog starts believing it is responsible for handling situations instead of looking to the owner for direction.

A stable dog should be able to exist calmly around people and the environment without constantly feeling the need to control it.

Resource guarding is not just about food or bones. A dog can guard anything they find valuable so toys, furniture, space, doorways, people, attention, or even random objects they steal.

A lot of owners miss the early signs because it does not always start as aggression. Sometimes it looks like stiffening, hovering over an item, hard staring, body blocking, or becoming tense when approached.

The goal is not to constantly take things away from the dog, but also not to let the dog believe they control access to everything they value. Through structure, boundaries, and clear communication, many dogs can learn to relax and stop feeling responsible for controlling those situations

When your dog struggles with visitors coming over, do you avoid the situation or use it as a training opportunity?

A lot of owners put the dog away to prevent the chaos. While that may make things easier in the moment, it doesn’t actually teach the dog how to handle guests appropriately the next time someone comes over.

The only way through these issues is to work through them. If you know someone is coming over, set the scenario up for training. Have the proper equipment on, hold your dog accountable to the commands they already know, and require calm behavior while distractions are present.

That’s where training becomes practical. Anyone can work commands in a quiet environment — the real progress happens when your dog can apply those same expectations in real-life situations.

Avoiding the problem only prolongs the stress. Working through it is what creates lasting change.

We work with a lot of reactive and aggressive dogs, and one of the biggest mistakes owners make is isolating them completely. Dogs can’t learn to stay calm around people and other dogs if they never experience them. Socialization doesn’t mean every dog needs to meet or interact — it means learning to calmly coexist in the same environment.

Two things make this difficult:

1.People approaching dogs without asking to pet them.
2.Off-leash dogs running up to leashed dogs.

Even if your dog is friendly, the other dog may not be. Situations like this can cause setbacks, trigger fights, or even create reactivity in dogs that didn’t previously have issues.

Always ask before petting someone’s dog, and respect it if they say no. It’s not personal they’re advocating for their dog and trying to keep everyone safe.
