The Civic Department of the Women's Club of Fall River had taken note of the plight of draft animals and began to wonder about the organization to care for them. After much discussion, the decision was made that the City needed a humane organization. A committee was formed and after much hard work and the recruitment of eleven members, the firs

t meeting was held in the parish house of the First Congregational Church in October, 1913. Plans were made and fund-raising began in earnest. The donations poured in and an old bam was purchased at 474 Durfee Street. An aging horse was donated, along with a blanket and wagon, and the stipulation that he be given care for the rest of his life. And with that beginning, the doors first opened on February 11, 1914 (incorporation came on June 25, 1914). In 1917, funds were donated to purchase the adjoining property, at which point runs and cages were added for small animals. The following Annual Report of April 15, 1926 captures the flavor of our early days: "Christmas dinners for horses were distributed as usual. ... bags of apples, grain and carrots to 80 horses who were found in the City and outlying districts that enjoyed a good dinner on Christmas Day thanks to the friends who contributed money and the ingredients for the dinners. Any balance Ieft after the expense of this annual event went into the fund for buying old and worn out not fit for use horses. The League is offering several prizes to the Girl Scouts for the best essays written on either of the two subjects 'Why We Love Dogs· or ·Some Pets of Famous Men·. The League has handled a very large number of dogs this year. Many are given up by owners to be humanely disposed of but the majority are vagrant and homeless dogs, strays picked up hungry and homeless, very often injured and dying in the City streets, often with collars but no name or license number to identify them. The automobile took its daily toll as well. The dogs at the shelter were made most comfortable this cold severe winter by the addition of nine storm windows on the dog kennels. When the League is called on for help, the question "Who will pay? is never asked. Animals First is our motto, and the compensation a secondary matter. And so, under modern and improved conditions the League enters upon the 14th year of service."

Hi everyone!

Kitten season is hitting us hard this year, and we’re running out of not only food, but also items we need to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our babies. We’re looking to restock the following items:

- dry kitten food
- laundry detergent
- 13 gallon trash bags
- contractor bags
- quart and gallon ziploc bags
- paper towels
- Windex

Still want to help but don’t have time to shop? We would also be extremely grateful for gift cards to BJs, Walmart, Tractor Supply, and Amazon so we can pick up the items we need.

As always, your friends at Faxon (both two- and four-legged) appreciate your support. We couldn’t help these sweet babies without your help! ❤️🐈🐾🐕

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Meet Mr. Penguino and Lois.

Mr. Penguino has been at the shelter since January, and while he is not the biggest fan of human interaction, he’s the designated “welcoming committee” for new cats. Every cat he has been introduced to has been a new friend. He’s been roommates with males and females, both adults and kittens and has been besties with all of them…

But Lois is a different story.

When Lois joined the crew in Penguino’s room, he immediately took to her. They could always be found snuggling together, regardless of how many cats they shared a room with. The staff (silly us) thought that maybe Penguino needed a room of his own so he could focus on getting better with people, so he moved into an office. After a few weeks, it became apparent that we had made a mistake. This guy was so sad without his kitty friends, so we reintroduced him back into the room where he originally was. He found his girl Lois right away, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. We walk by the room and catch him cuddling and grooming her (but being the macho guy he is, he of course stops being sweet when he sees you looking).

Think you might be able to give these two lovebirds a chance at a new life? Since they’ve become so bonded, we really would hate to separate them. If you're able to give these two sweethearts a loving home, come visit them during our normal business hours or fill out the application at https://airtable.com/appuByqpwx7zy0Hi8/pagVHMwd3rJZ8wTYi/form.

Back in February, a sweet American Bully mix named Knuckles was brought into the shelter when his owners couldn’t keep him. He immediately became a fan favorite among staff and volunteers alike. He was adopted once through us but it didn’t work out…

But everything happens for a reason.

A family found this boy on Petfinder and immediately fell in love with him. He went home to his new human (and furry) family and the rest is history.

Here’s an update from his family:

“We are so madly in love with Knuckles. He has fit right in with our other two dogs - after a couple of crazy days of adjusting - and right into our schedule and lifestyle. He is absolutely glued to my side (Mama) at all times and I do not mind at all. He is such a cuddle bug, loves to chew on toys (and there are plenty), knows and enjoys the walk routine and will take a car ride when he can get one. As good as he was in his crate he sleeps better with us at night and I swore we would never let that happen, but he's just too cute to resist! We are all so lucky to have him in our lives - thank you for helping us get him here and thank you so much for all you do : ) “

Congratulations to this sweet boy and his amazing family. Your friends at Faxon wish you the best Happily Ever After ever!

Meet Jasper!

This 3 year old boy is 24 pounds of pure goofball. He came to us from another shelter after he was caught outside as a stray. He enjoys playing outside, stuffing his face with treats, and getting belly rubs. He loves every human he comes in contact with, but he’s choosy about his canine companions.

He’s fully vetted and vaccinated, and he’s already had his neuter procedure.

If you think this silly dude would be a good fit for your family, please come in and pay him a visit during our business hours or fill out the application at https://airtable.com/appuByqpwx7zy0Hi8/pagVHMwd3rJZ8wTYi/form

🐾 Looking to add a furry family member to your crew? Worried about how they might get along?

It can take a long time for animals to get used to each other, so it’s important to be patient. Most experts agree that 3 is the magic number.

⭐ 3 days to decompress
⭐ 3 weeks to get used to routine
⭐ 3 months to feel settled

Check out these tips to make sure everyone gets off to a great start!
