Emma Lou's Kitchen

Emma Lou's Kitchen Fresh, completely balanced,human-grade quality, all natural food for your dog. Emma Lou's Kitchen is truly a labor of love. She began feeding Emma with it.

Shortly after Kristen Zang adopted her puppy Emma, she received jarring news. Emma was diagnosed with Distemper, a condition that leaves most dogs affected by it having to be put to sleep. Determined to save Emma, Kristen set out to learn everything she could about dog nutrition and the pet food industry. This was around the same time that many of the pet food companies were issuing recalls. Zang

consulted veterinarians, nutritionists and other specialists while simultaneously studying the diets of most dogs. She learned that most of what was being sold at pet stores was not healthy for them. Through her research, Kristen developed homemade dog food (which is actually people food) that was compliant with the AAFCO’s recommended dietary balance among proteins, vitamins, fats and micronutrients. Thanks to the health benefits of Kristen’s creation, all signs of Distemper quickly disappeared. Emma is now getting ready to party down at her Sweet 16! After experiencing the joy of Emma’s restoration to excellent health, Kristen wanted to share these benefits with other dog owners. What began as a small operation out of her home is now a rapidly growing company serving many satisfied and steadily returning customers. She now works in a commercial kitchen to accommodate the volume of food she’s producing, and yet maintains her personal touch by cooking everything from scratch. Kristen hopes to continue to grow Emmalou’s Kitchen exponentially and be able to share the love with as many dogs as possible.

The hardest part about eating Emma Lou’s? Waiting for permission. 😂🐾

That face says, “I can see my dinner. I can smell my dinner. So why exactly are we still standing here?”

When dinner is made with fresh, real ingredients, patience is a lot to ask. ❤️

Dog food should look like FOOD. 🥕🥦🥩

Not watery.
Not sloppy.
Not mush.

You should be able to see the real ingredients in your dog’s bowl — recognizable pieces of meat, vegetables, and whole foods.

At Emma Lou’s Kitchen, we don’t blend everything into an unrecognizable paste. We believe fresh food should have texture, substance, and ingredients you can actually see.

Because if we call it real food, it should look like real food. ❤️🐾

Grief looks different for everyone—even dogs. 💔

After losing their owner and spending days by their side, this sweet dog was heartbroken. Once rescued, they wouldn’t eat. Their world had completely changed, and food simply didn’t interest them.

Then their foster offered Emma Lou’s. And they ate. ❤️

Stories like this are exactly why fostering matters so much. A foster home can be the bridge between the worst days of a dog’s life and the beginning of something new. A safe place. A patient hand. A warm meal. Someone willing to show them that they’re not alone.

In the spirit of giving, we love sending Emma Lou’s Kitchen food to foster and rescue dogs whenever we can. We may only be filling their bowls, but sometimes a bowl of nourishing food is about so much more than dinner.

Sometimes, taking that first bite means they’re beginning to come back. 🥹❤️🐾

To every foster who opens their home to a dog who needs them—thank you. What you do matters more than you know.

What started as a mission to help my rescue dog survive distemper turned into this. ❤️

When I rescued Emma, she was fighting distemper. I started making homemade food for her because I was determined to give her the very best chance at survival. Not only did she survive—Emma went on to live to be 18 years old. And that one incredible dog changed everything.

I went on to work with veterinary nutritionists to create five complete and balanced recipes—and Emma Lou’s Kitchen was born.

Nearly 18 years later, there are some things that will never change.

We will never sell out to a co-packer. We will never cut corners on sourcing or compromise the quality of our ingredients. We will never become a mass-produced dog food company.

We will always make our food in our own kitchen, in micro batches, with real ingredients you can actually see. The same way we always have.

One rescue dog. One mission. Nearly 18 years later… this. ❤️🐾

And we’re just getting started.
