Around here they are roly polies. We have also heard pill bug, doodlebug and potato bug.

Here is the part that gets people. This is not a bug at all. A roly poly is a crustacean, closer kin to a crab than to a beetle. There is a good chance one is under a flower pot in your yard right now.

We are going to say it out loud: build it first. Run the whole setup empty for a week and watch the numbers. If the heat and the humidity hold steady with nobody home, you are ready for the animal.

For us it is the praying mantis, the one bug almost everybody agrees to let live. 🐛
This one turned its head and looked straight back at the camera, and no other insect can do that.

What did your pet do that had you googling at 2am? 😅

For a lot of new keepers it is a ball python that stops eating. Here is the tip nobody hands you at the start: a healthy adult can skip meals for weeks, especially once the nights cool off. Check the warm side, put them on a scale, and let the calendar go. Steady weight and good temps mean fussy, not sick. 🐍
