One of the most common misconceptions about dog nail trims is that every dog’s nails should look the same afterward.

These are my two Labrador Retrievers immediately after fresh nail trims. Both dogs have their nails trimmed every month and sometimes even more frequently for my red Lab. Since he was a puppy, I’ve consistently worked to encourage his quicks to recede.

As you can see, my black Lab’s nails are very short and no longer touch the floor. My red Lab’s nails, however, still appear longer even though they are trimmed as short as they can safely go. If I take even a little more off, they will bleed.

This is a great example of how every dog’s nail anatomy is different. Some dogs naturally have longer quicks that simply don’t recede much, no matter how consistently their nails are trimmed or dremeled.

A healthy nail trim isn’t about making every dog’s nails look identical it’s about trimming each dog’s nails as short as safely possible while keeping them comfortable and pain-free. Every dog is different, and that’s completely normal!
