Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc. ANRV is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit that works with Alaskan villages to provide modern veterinary care, spays and neuters to pets and sled dogs.

All of our Board members are mushers and most of us are born and raised in rural Alaska. We all work towards bringing modern culturally positive veterinary care to rural Alaska.

Alaska Native Rural Veterinary, Inc. is excited to partner with Petco Love in their commitment to distribute 1 million free pet vaccines and help prevent life-threatening diseases in pets across the country.

In rural Alaska, access to veterinary care and preventive vaccines can be challenging, especially in remote communities. Diseases like parvovirus and distemper can have a devastating impact on dogs, making vaccination one of the most important tools we have to protect pets and help prevent the spread of disease.

These vaccines help protect individual pets while also strengthening disease prevention across entire communities.

We are incredibly grateful to Petco Love for helping us make preventive veterinary care more accessible to pets and families throughout rural Alaska. Together, we can help keep pets healthier, prevent the spread of serious disease, and save more pet lives.

AFN/ANRV: Five communities, one trip, one shared goal — improving access to Tribal veterinary public health care across rural Alaska.

We just completed an incredible trip to Nulato, Koyukuk, Chalkyitsik, Beaver, and Arctic Village!

A huge thank you to the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) for this amazing partnership and for making the AFN/ANRV Tribal Veterinary Public Health Initiative possible.

Through this initiative, we provide accessible, culturally appropriate veterinary care alongside rural Tribal communities — including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, deworming, zoonotic disease surveillance, and a barrier-to-care study to better understand the challenges communities face in accessing veterinary and public health services.

We are incredibly grateful to the communities who invited us, welcomed us, shared Indigenous knowledge, and made each clinic possible. We are honored that AFN and Tribal communities trust us to be part of this work that is so important to the health and quality of life for both pets and people.

Beaver, Alaska: Here’s Pete in 2015 (with Lyla Evans)—the year we neutered him—and here he is again 11 years later in 2026, getting his veterinary exam.

Pete is a wonderful example of why consistent access to veterinary care matters.

When families have consistent, nonjudgmental veterinary care, they have more opportunities to keep their dogs healthy and thriving, prevent unwanted litters and overpopulation, and improve the quality of life for both pets and people.

At ANRV, Inc., we don’t measure our success simply by the number of spay and neuter surgeries we perform. We measure success by what happens over time: seeing animals on subsequent trips that were already spayed or neutered by our team on previous trips and seeing the overall health and condition of the animals.

Pete is exactly the kind of long-term outcome we want to see. He was neutered by us in 2015, and 11 years later, we are still able to provide him with veterinary care. His story is a reminder that this work isn’t just about one clinic or one visit. It’s about building long-term, trusting relationships with Tribal communities and creating consistent access to care so that dogs and people can remain healthy throughout their lives.

We appreciate AFN, TCC, and the Tribal communities for partnering with us on this issue that is so important! Together, we can make a difference!

Yay, we made it to Koyukuk despite the wind and had a wonderful visit providing veterinary care!

A huge thank you to "William" Rob Pilot, who made sure we were able to see all the dogs in the community. Rob coordinated with families, helped us, and truly made the clinic a success. He also shared that legendary musher Benedict Jones is his grandfather, and that his own companion dog Bullet traces back to his family's famous lines—a wonderful piece of history!

Experiences like this remind us that the most successful clinics happen when we work alongside our Tribal community partners. Local knowledge, leadership, and teamwork make this possible!

We are also deeply grateful to the Alaska Federation of Natives for partnering with us. Together, we're expanding access to veterinary public health services in rural Alaska Tribal communities and we're honored by AFN's trust and commitment to this shared vision.

Thank you, Koyukuk, for welcoming us. We are honored to work together to improve the health and quality of life for both the pets and people.

Wish us luck, we're in Nulato waiting for the wind to subside so we can fly to Koyukuk today.

Plan B, we'll see if someone can bring us over by boat if the river is safe enough for travel.

The locals say that if it's too windy for planes, the river may likely be too rough to travel on, so we'll see what happens...fingers crossed.
