Someone asked about our breeching and why we use it. So let's talk about it!!
Mind you, we never used breeching or really even breast collars in Wisconsin. We rarely ever put shoes on a horse before moving to Kentucky. Wisconsin is more flat land than anything. Not real rocky. The "hills" and footing don't compare. But, the land here in Kentucky is different. Many more steep hills with longer inclines and declines. So, we've made some changes to our tack over the years to support that change!
First off, we use all treeless saddles. This is a personal preference. Let's be honest, we have A LOT of horses. Running one of the larger rocky herds in the RMHA. having 10+ saddles, for 2-3 riders, to attempt to accommodate all of our horses is expensive and we find treed saddles to be quite uncomfortable. Treeless saddles, when done right with proper saddle pads providing spinal clearance and well fitting cinch, flex to the horse and can fit MOST horses. Are we saying it's the right thing for everyone, no. There are a lot of factors to decide what saddle is best for YOU and YOUR HORSE. Especially if you have balance problems they can do more harm than good of you can't distribute your weight properly with a good seat in a treeless saddle. We do believe in a good saddle fitter for you and your horse. When you have a herd of our size, cycling through 4-5 young horses in a year, treeless has been more practical. We also have good balance and sense for weight distribution. So it works for us.
A common issue with treeless saddles is slippage. Slippage will happen during mounting and steep inclines/declines. Slippage can cause galling (sores in the cinch area), or you can end up on the shoulders, or further back during the slip. Keep in mind this can/does happen with treed saddles as well depending on the horse's withers. Unfortunately, rockies come in all shapes and sizes when it comes to withers, but there are a lot that are "mutton" withered. Meaning they have lower, wider more round or flat withers that are not as defined and are much harder to fit a saddle to without slippage. Withers keep your saddle in place. If they don't have well defined withers, you're more prone to slippage even with a well fitted saddle. This is where breeching and breast collars come in.
Breast collars or breast plates, will keep the saddle from slipping back on the horse and twisting during mounting/dismounting. Putting less strain on the cinch area and reducing the chance of gall sores.
Breeching or britchen, wrap around the horses rear and will keep the saddle from slipping forward onto the shoulders. Again, putting less strain on the cinch area, reducing gall sores and keeping everything in place. In addition, breeching is a great training aid for a couple reasons. 1 - desensitizing a horse to things around its hind end. 2 - collection and posture by encouraging a horse to engage it's hind end and carry themselves balanced rather than strung out. Something gaited horses can really benefit from in the long run. 3 - our training horses are going to other people, they may benefit from us desensitizing them to these aids ahead of time. You never know what kind of riding they'll be doing in their future! Setting them up for success in the long run is a priority of ours.
Another thing people use instead of breeching is a crupper. Cruppers wrap around the tail and attatch to the back of the saddle. Again, for stability and slippage. However, cruppers can put a lot of strain on the horses tail or even pinch depending on the weight of the load. Over time this can cause strain to the tail/back pain since the tail is part of the spine. So, we opt to breeching over cruppers for the overall health of our horses.
Looking at the two Rockies pictured.... Crimson (silver bay) has higher, more defined withers than Tide (chocolate) and his lower, more rounded and overall flatter withers. Crimson's saddle does not slip nearly as bad as Tide's saddle due to the shape of his withers aiding in stability of the saddle. Tide benefits greatly from the breeching and breast collar on more steep terrain. Crimson will learn to wear the breast collar and breeching, but may not need them as much as Tide may depending on the style of riding he is doing. But they will both be prepared if their new owners decide they want to use or need them in the future!

A solo ride with Roll Tide 🌊
He did amazing on his first solo ride. Mom met us out on the trails in the side by side to capture some moments along the way. Then we continued on.
We did some mild gait work, learned a few new things, had a pig encounter, waited patiently while I chatted with some neighbors, and got used to his breeching setup!
His gait will only get better as he gets stronger and continues to gain confidence on the trails. β™₯️

RMR's Roll Tide
Barn name: Tide
2021, 14.2hh, chocolate gelding (5.5yrs old)
Started lightly at 5 years old, now he is working into heavier training/riding. He has so many gears and LOVES the trails as much as we do! Solid with his groundwork, very light and responsive. He loads/unloads from both slant and straight load trailers with ease. Baths, ties quietly as long as you desire, mounts and dismounts without moving an inch, and doesn't mind dogs weaving in and out of the group on the trails. He will lead, follow, and go out alone with ease and walks up and down steep inclines/descents. His training will continue and he will be exposed to more technical/rocky trails once we get some shoes on him in the next week or two. His gait is already wonderful and will only improve with conditioning!
Come visit him to see if he's your perfect match!
Location: Ewing, KY

What a fantastic ride! This is roll tides second time out on the trails…. To start we loaded into a friend's small 2 horse straight load trailer. This was new since we use all slant load trailers. Once we got riding we experienced some little hills and steeper inclines, we led the ride, followed in the back, stood still while the other horse and rider rode around a building out of sight, stood in places and chatted with a neighbor, did some nice speed walking, this boy has the gears! He will poke along with slower horses, or get out and move, just an all around great ride, I think I’m in love 😍

RMR's Crimson Tide
15-15.1hh, 5yr old, Silver Bay Gelding
His first ride off the farm! He did wonderful. Slightly hesitant here and there, but moved along with encouragement. Cows, water, road, and his first motorcycle encounter. He will do nothing but improve with miles and exposure!
Dede must've been low on power steering fluid.. she was giving Miranda a run for her money trying to video and steer at the same time πŸ˜‚ so we have a few different clips compiled into one video.

As always, Miranda's squeaky stirrup is a paid actor in this film. One day we will oil it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Proud is an understatement!
Tide's FIRST ride off the farm, his 6th ride overall (4 round pen, 1 around the farm, this trail ride).
He absolutely rocked it. Led 95% of the ride. Was a touch squirrely for the first 5 minutes, nothing crazy, just taking it all in, then settled right in like a seasoned pro!
He is a MOVER! The smoothest walk, he just cruises at an amazing pace. It's like you're floating. And his gait... wow, chefs kiss. We're not kidding when we say all he needs is miles and consistency.
He's going to be an absolute DREAM in no time flat.

RMR's Saving Secrets
14.3hh, 6yr old Silver Bay mare
Scarlett is getting started back up under saddle alongside Tide and Crimson. She had 1 ride last fall on the lead line, and 1 ride this past spring in the round pen that started on the long line and ended off of it. Scarlett got 2 more round pen rides under her belt last week. A couple more and she will be ready to join Miranda and Lily outside of the round pen.

🌊 RMR's Roll Tide 🌊
Barn name: Tide
14.2hh 5yr old chocolate cream gelding. We have 3 horses getting back under saddle after some time off due to personal reasons.
You'll be seeing a lot more of him and Crimson now that we're back in the swing of things! He will be starting his trail adventures with Miranda and Lily over the weekend and early next week ❀️
Reservations accepted on this gorgeous gelding with required visitation/meet and greet (required for all of our trail horses) prior to purchase. He will be finished out for trail over the next couple months prior to being able to leave.
Tide is already gaiting beautifully, he really only needs consistency and trail miles/experience.
