Remember all those sweet dogs we had in the shop that were up for adoption through different rescues? Here's the update!
Adopted: Chloe, Sammi, Georgie, and mostly Dustin 😉 Dustin is a foster to adopt situation. And best news is that they are friends of mine so I still get to hug my sweet boy! 🥰❤️
Still in foster: Scotch. But this handsome guy has the BEST foster who is continuing his training, continuing to advocate for him, and has a big network to reach out to potential adopters for him. He couldn't have gone to a better foster home. ❤️ And if he still needs a place to go after hers he can always come back to us ❤️

The last few months working have been TOUGH. Tough only because we've been so busy and working our butts off with the dogs that have come through. We're not lazy 😅 we put everything we have into these dogs to make them the best versions of themselves so when you get your dog back, or adopt one we've trained, you are getting a very well mannered dog. Now we're heading off on vacation for a bit so check back in with us in a couple weeks and see what fun new dogs we get to work with! ❤️

Scotch and Sammi (now Mazzy since she's getting adopted!❤️) both LOVE to run and wrestle. But sometimes they have a hard time slowing down and taking breaks so I'll implement a little place work in there to call for a little reset before going back out to play.
Teaching your dog an off switch really is a BIG DEAL.
No one wants a dog who just goes and goes 24/7.... Teaching them when it's time to shut down for a bit us crucial for their state of mind! ❤️

I get that people don't want their dog to walk in a strict heel position the entire walk, but let's be honest, they need to at least stay in a relaxed calm state of mind the MAJORITY of the walk. Otherwise how else are you going to achieve a chill walk if you let them wander all over sniffing everything the entire time?

Scotch walked in a relaxed heel position the majority of his walk but it was time to give him a little potty and exploration break, so here are those 'Freedom Rules'
1) You still can't pull on the leash. Ever.
2) I'll give you one or two good p*e breaks but that's it. No extra marking or p*eing on everything. (Territorial behavior much?) And obviously when you have to p**p...
3) Your sniff time is as long as it takes you to hit the end of the leash and then we're moving again. I'm not stopping my walk so you can sniff a leaf for 5 minutes.
4) Still can't say hi to strangers. Still have to remain neutral to your surroundings.

Enforce these Freedom Rules and you'll be able to enjoy those walks even more. ❤️

Watch Scotch go from uncertain to way more confident with the help of his friend, Sammi! 😍

Some dogs that are afraid of water need a buddy who loves it to help them get over their fear and try it for the sake of playing. That's how Kalibr ended up loving the water after being afraid of it for so long!

Way to go Scotch! ❤️

We all know Georgie is a fearful little guy. What he has slowly been realizing throughout his time with us is that I don't really care. 😆 And you shouldn't either!
When we let the dogs live in their fear, never pushing them, we do them a serious disservice. I couldn't care less about how scared Georgie was about helping me plant my garden, he was going to do it anyway. And he did! And he realized it really wasn't that bad. 😎
I didn't care how scared he was to come into my house, sit on the couch with me, and be snuggled while we watched TV. I just made him do it. Yes, I had to coach the kids a bit to accommodate, but overall he had to witness the chaos and be ok with it. And he freaking NAPPED on my lap! ❤️
Would he have chosen to do those things on his own? Absolutely not. Would he have let me clip leashes on him, reach into the crate, pick him up, pet him, etc on his own in the beginning? Nope. He would have bitten us. And he did lol. But he worked through that and now we can do all of the above. ❤️

Basically, it's not kind to let them continue living in their fear. It's way better, and more successful, to take their hand (or leash) and show them that the things they are scared of really aren't that bad at all and can actually be enjoyed. ❤️

Do you have patience for a dog like Georgie? If you do, you'd have a partner for life. ❤️

First off, it shouldn't be like this.

Scotch should never have been put on the euthanasia list to begin with. People fail dogs when they refuse to tell them no.

Second, there's no way this boy can't find at least a foster to take him for a little bit. He's such a gem! Our entire staff LOVE this dog and don't want to see him end up back on the euthanasia list which is exactly where he will go if he goes back to that place.

About Scotch:
He's an energetic goofball who just wants to play. ❤️ Giving him a solid outlet like tug, fetch, running, biking (he's amazing as a biking partner!) hiking, long walks, etc. Once he's got an outlet he's a couch potato. 🥰

He walks amazingly on leash. Not reactive. Has a little too much interest in cats so that would be a hesitancy but not a no go.

He LOVES kids. Small kids he might knock over with his exuberance but he'd love to snuggle and hangout with them all day. ❤️

Not going to lie ... Positive reinforcement only training will not work with this guy. As most pits are, he's a boundary pusher who needs to be told what the rules are, firmly, and when that happens he's got a clear understanding of right and wrong and will happily follow along with the rules.

When I say Scotch is amazing. I freaking mean it. This is guy is NOT going back to that shelter. But we're going to have to ask for some help to make sure that doesn't happen. ❤️

Scotch has been making friends but he's always had to stay on leash because he just wanted to play ALL THE TIME and struggled to find the off switch.
Today he played with Chloe again and it was instant bestie time. 🥰 They've been playing, running (no prey drive with the running! 🥳) and then just hanging out and it's so nice to see!
Dogs were not meant to play constantly. That's where they can get over tired, over stimulated, be put into either defense or prey drive, or start to get annoyed with each other. It's best to call for breaks from the playing every so often so they learn how to start regulating themselves and we can avoid the majority of the issues stated already.

We need breaks every so often to reset. We need to give our dogs breaks too.

Scotch is an awesome dog who is still looking for his forever home! ❤️
