Happy International Dog Day! 🤍🐾
Today we’re celebrating one of the most magnificent gentle giants around — the Great Pyrenees! 🐕‍🦺🏔️

Great Pyrenees are calm, loving, and gentle dogs who can make absolutely wonderful pets when their owners understand and appreciate their unique nature. They aren’t just big, fluffy couch potatoes — they are guardians at heart. ❤️

These incredible dogs are happiest when they have a family to watch over, whether that’s their humans or the other pets in the household. They have a natural instinct to protect and keep watch, a trait that goes back centuries. In fact, the Great Pyrenees is one of the oldest livestock guardian breeds, originally bred to protect flocks from predators.

And then there’s that beautiful, thick coat! ☁️🐾 That gorgeous fur comes with a little extra work because they shed twice a year, they “blow” their undercoat! If you know, you know… 😂🧹

Another Great Pyrenees quirk? Crater-making! 🕳️Their thick coats can make them warm, so many Pyr owners discover that their dogs love digging big holes in the yard to find a cool spot to relax. It may not win them any landscaping awards, but to a Pyr, it’s the perfect summer lounge chair! 😎

Great Pyrenees are loyal, independent, protective, and incredibly special. They may not always do things simply because you asked — after all, they were bred to make decisions on their own, but that independent spirit is part of what makes them so wonderful.

Today, give your Great Pyrenees an extra belly rub, a cool spot to relax, and maybe forgive that crater in the yard. 😂🤍🐾 ❤️

Did you know that just one mosquito bite can put your pet at risk for heartworm disease?

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause serious, potentially life-threatening damage to your dog’s or cat’s heart, lungs, and blood vessels. The good news? Heartworm disease is preventable! 🐶🐱

💙 We’ve seen firsthand how important prevention and treatment can be.

One of our patients, Jake, tested positive for heartworms when he was adopted out from a rescue group. ❤️‍🩹 Thankfully, Jake received four rounds of treatment, and when he was tested again, he came back negative and heartworm-free! 🎉

Today, Jake is healthy, happy, and living his best life! His story is a wonderful reminder that heartworm disease can be successfully treated, but preventing it in the first place is even better.

August: Itchy pet awareness month

Despite its name, ringworm isn't caused by a worm—it's a fungal infection of the skin, hair, and nails. It is also zoonotic, which means it can spread between animals and people, so early treatment is important.

Common signs of ringworm include:
🔹 Circular patches of hair loss
🔹 Red, scaly, or crusty skin
🔹 Itching (though some pets may not be very itchy)
🔹 Broken or brittle hair

Treatment may include:
✔️ Prescription antifungal medications (oral)
✔️ Antifungal creams, ointments, or sprays
✔️ Medicated antifungal shampoos or dips
✔️ Cleaning and disinfecting your pet's environment to help prevent reinfection

If you notice any suspicious skin lesions or hair loss on your dog or cat, schedule a veterinary exam. With proper treatment and good hygiene, most pets recover well.

It's been about a week since this injured tortoise came into our care, and we're happy to share a little update on his progress.

He had his bandages changed and received laser therapy treatment as part of his recovery plan. Laser therapy helps increases circulation, reduces inflammation and pain, and promotes faster wound healing. It's a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can make a meaningful difference during the healing process.

He's continuing to rest comfortably while we monitor his progress closely and provide the care he needs every step of the way.

Thank you to everyone who has been thinking of him and supporting his recovery. Every kind word and gesture means so much, and we'll continue to share updates as he heals. 💚🐢

We currently have a rescued tortoise in our care. He has been examined, bandaged, and has begun treatment for his injuries. Based on his condition, we expect he will remain with us for approximately the next two months while he recovers.

We have one very important request: if you are the kind person who dropped this tortoise off, or if you know who did, please contact us as soon as possible. We need to know exactly where he was found so that once he has fully recovered, we can safely return him to the area he came from.

Thank you to the Good Samaritan who made sure he got the help he needed. Now we just need a little more information to help us complete his journey home. ❤️
