Tip of the Day: Scoops are great… until you realize how creative we can get with them.

Most of us feed our horses by the scoop. It’s quick, easy, and once you get into a routine it feels pretty consistent. But every once in a while, I pull out a small handheld luggage scale and weigh their feed.

Why? A few reasons.

First, it helps me plan my trips to the feed store. When I know roughly how many pounds each horse eats per day, I can do the math and figure out how long a bag will actually last. Fewer “I thought we had more feed” moments.

Second, it makes it much easier to estimate the monthly feed budget. When you know how many pounds your horses are actually going through, it’s a lot simpler to predict what you’ll be spending each month.

Third, it keeps my scooping honest. A scoop can mean a lot of things depending on the day—level scoop, rounded scoop, generous scoop, or the classic “I’m in a hurry and that looks about right” scoop. Weighing it occasionally lets me see how consistent I really am.

And finally, it gives me a better sense of what they’re actually consuming each day. Knowing their feed in pound...not just scoops...helps me understand their intake a little more clearly.

It only takes a minute, but it’s a simple way to double-check that your one scoop today is the same one scoop you fed yesterday. I happened to see this at the feed store but there are a ton on Amazon too!

During cold snaps, horses burn more calories just staying warm, so free-choice hay becomes especially important. I like to keep hay available 24/7 and pay close attention to water intake—things like adding salt and serving warm mashes are little things you can do to make the cold a little easier on them.

Texas weather may be unpredictable, but thoughtful, consistent care makes a big difference.

My coop is designed for Texas summers so the chickens don’t overheat, which means it’s not naturally winter-proof. With this cold snap coming in, I made a few temporary, budget-friendly adjustments to keep everyone comfortable for the next few days:

✔️ Clear shower curtain liners + zip ties to block wind while still letting in light
✔️ Budget cedar fence posts for structure
✔️ Straw/hay bales for insulation and warm lounging spots
✔️ Heat lamp for extra warmth during the coldest nights

Nothing fancy—just practical solutions to keep animals safe and comfortable when the weather does something unexpected. This is exactly the kind of thing I pay close attention to when caring for other people’s animals too. 🌾

Daily care for dogs, cats, poultry (chickens & ducks), and other pets

Barn management and property oversight, including fence, gate, and water system checks

Health checks and first aid, with experience knowing when to treat and when to call the vet

Photo updates so you can see that your animals are happy and well cared for while you’re away

Hi, I’m Jennifer, and welcome to No Worries Farm & Pet Sitting!

Animals have been a central part of my life—my family has run a boarding kennel, and I’ve personally owned and cared for horses for over 35 years. I have extensive experience in barn management, horse training, and first aid for horses. I know when to step in and when it’s time to call the vet, so you can feel confident your animals are in safe, capable hands.

I understand how hard it can be as a farm owner to leave your animals behind. That’s why I follow your routines closely and provide attentive, reliable care, keeping your animals calm, happy, and well cared for while you’re away.

I provide farm and pet sitting throughout East Texas, serving mostly Van Zandt and Henderson Counties. I do serve some of the surrounding areas depending on location. I care for horses, dogs, cats, poultry (chickens and ducks), and livestock such as cattle, goats and pigs. I treat every animal as if they were my own, because I know how important routine, care, and attention are to their health and happiness. References are available upon request.
