And the answer to yesterday's "What’s that Sound?" is… Sequoia the raccoon crunching on apples!

Raccoons are omnivores that eat diverse foods including fruits (like berries), nuts (like acorns), roots, small animals, and more.

*Edit: please note, this was a re-accreditation inspection, meaning we have continued to meet AZA standards since 1995 when Sequoia Park Zoo was first accredited*

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has announced that Sequoia Park Zoo was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission. Following a comprehensive evaluation, the Accreditation Commission determined that the facility meets AZA’s standards for animal wellbeing, care and management.

“Congratulations to the leadership and staff at Sequoia Park Zoo for attaining the global gold standard in zoological and aquarium accreditation,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “AZA’s standards continuously evolve to reflect best practices in the zoo and aquarium profession, with a strong emphasis on animal care and wellbeing at their core. Sequoia Park Zoo has demonstrated a dedication to this exceptional level of care.”

AZA accreditation includes a detailed application and a meticulous multiple-day on-site inspection by an independent team of zoological professionals. The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal care and wellbeing; veterinary care; staff training; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; risk management; governance; and guest services.

A thorough review ensures that each facility has met and will continue to meet ever-rising standards. As a condition of Association membership, AZA facilities must complete this rigorous accreditation process every five years.

Who’s ready for our 21+ science night?!

Join us at OktoBEARfest at Sequoia Park Zoo presented by Humboldt C***r Company! Learn about how to safely coexist with our wild black bear neighbors by watching our resident bears chomp and stomp their way through Bear Camp!

We will have demonstration campsites set up – Good Camp Versus Bear Camp. Good, bear-aware campsites let bears and humans both enjoy nature without conflict. Many campsites (bear camp/bad camp) unintentionally invite wild neighbors to consume our food and destroy our equipment. These setups put bears and humans in danger. We share easy tips for safe camping and ways to keep bears wild.

Many thanks to RMI Outdoors for sponsoring our bear-aware campsite. 🏕️

Come for the c***r - stay for the science!
