I’ve been doing some group nosework recently as shown in this video. In the moment, I did not notice the synchronized eye tracking thing that was going on with the dogs….. buahahahahaha… zoom in on the dogs behind the white gate for full effect.

We have a teenager around here….

This can be such a tough time for dogs and their humans.

Kiri is trying to figure out everything about the world and how she fits in it. She is trying new behaviors to see how they work out for her. Just like a human teen, she tests limits and pushes boundaries. This is normal.

I stay sane by being firm and fair. I am telling her ‘no’ more often now and am offsetting those withdrawals from our relationship bank around with deposits like exploring the world with her in the lead and delighting in the things she finds delightful like picking blackberries off the vine, splashing in water, watching wildlife, etc. that’s what matters to her right now so it matters to me too. Just a morning wander with Kiri and Leo musing about a sad situation that has unfolded in the last week where it came to light that a young dog’s behavior issue was actually a pain issue. This is way too common and hard to see when humans don’t know what pain looks like in dogs. Absolutely heartbreaking.💔

Incorporating Kiri into our decompression walks has been A LOT of work, but so, so worth it, and honestly, she is exceeding my expectations by a lot.

Holding a sit while another dog retrieves a stick from a body of water? HARD!

Staying in a down with me at a distance even when your buddy breaks the down and then thwacks you in the eye ball a couple times with their tail? Next level HARD!

Now watch everything fall apart in adolescence…. lol

Thresholds like gates and doorways hold a lot of meaning for dogs and bring up big feelings. When dogs have big feelings, there is a greater risk of conflict. I use threshold releases to manage the chaos, see video.

Having a threshold release (waiting at a threshold until I call the dog over) is a critical foundation skill for multidog situations. You can see that Chiqui and Roxy are a bit confused when I call them. They are relatively new to this skill unlike the rest of the dogs. They will catch on quickly, I’m sure of it.
