24 hours. That’s how long my “much-needed break” lasted before reality hit.

Alex is completely down for the count sick, and I’m forcing myself to show up. Emotionally, I’m checked out.

This year has been the absolute worst. Please just be patient with us right now.

Happy June everyone! For the whole month of June, Vegan Legion is excited to support The Shore Sanctuary!

Located in Lakeside, Ca (San Diego County), the Shore Sanctuary initially got its start in 2020 when it first opened its doors to birds, thanks to the Bird Mama herself, Ash Shore. Eventually, the Shore Sanctuary began welcoming other non-human friends like pigs, dogs, cats and other flock animals, including turkeys and one fine emu named Maybe Baby!

Together with co-founder, Alex, Ash and the all-volunteer team at the Shore Sanctuary have built a place where “the vulnerable find their strength.”

We have another donation match opportunity

It’s been a rough few days here. We are still trying to process the sudden loss of Biscuit on Saturday night, right on top of some massive vet bills from last week and caring for Darcy while she recovers from amputation.It’s a lot to carry right now.

Ash is still currently taking some time away. Saturday has opened up the door of the entire past year of trauma. While nothing can mend her broken heart, I want to work hard to keep things running so she can rest and see that the sanctuary will be okay while she takes a break.

Last week’s medical bills were $6,700+ and we haven’t even raised a quarter of that yet.Biscuit’s emergency & final costs/necropsy is an additional unexpected $2,500+.Asking for financial help is never easy. The reality of running a sanctuary is that we can’t do this without backup and Our reserves our out. Every single dollar goes straight to the animals care.

We hit our first donation match on Sunday morning. Because of that, the same donor has generously offered another $500 match in memory of Biscuit to help us cover final expenses.

If you’ve got a few bucks to spare, your donation will be doubled right now. I know a stable bank account won’t fix a broken heart, but I want to show Ash that the community has our back and that the sanctuary is going to be okay while she heals.

Babies first dust bath!

An emergency for Darcy, a big vet bill, and why we desperately need our community today...
 
It feels like we have been hit hard with emergency after emergency this year, because we really have 😓. As a small nonprofit organization, we truly rely on community support to do the work we do. Lately, donations have been drastically down—but the level of care these animals require remains the same.

Today our sweet crossbeak chicken, Darcy, had to undergo emergency surgery to amputate her toe. What we initially hoped was just bumblefoot turned out to be a mass. We have sent the mass out for histopathology testing because, we are concerned that Darcy might have cancer. We are anxiously holding our breath,waiting for good news but her surgery went smoothly and she’s already settling into house chicken life! This girl doesn’t skip a beat.

Darcy wasn’t the only one who needed care today. Our incredible vet saw a huge portion of the sanctuary family for everything from urgent diagnostics, to senior dentals with extractions.

Even with generous discounts, today’s grand total came out to $6,739.60. Seeing that number is terrifying. So far, we are so grateful to have raised $460 so far toward this $6,739.60 total.

If we could carry the entire weight of this organization and all of these medical bills on our own shoulders, we would. But we simply cannot. We absolutely cannot do this work alone. We need our community, and we desperately need to replenish the funds in our medical account so we can keep providing life-saving care.
