In just over three weeks, I’ll be bringing home my 8-week-old Labrador puppy, Senyu, and I’m already thinking about how I want to approach her puppy socialization.
Instead of immediately taking her out into the world and exposing her to everything at once, I want to break things down into smaller pieces, sights, sounds, smells, textures, movement, surfaces, and so much more.
Not only to help her build confidence and develop a strong relationship with me, but because these are all things she’s going to encounter throughout her life.
My goal is to introduce these experiences gradually, so when we eventually increase the level of distraction and enter public environments, she has already had opportunities to experience many of these individual things in a way she can process.
Think about it from a human perspective.
If you’re driving somewhere unfamiliar and relying on your GPS, but the music is really loud, what do you do? You turn the music down so you can concentrate.
Not because your hearing affects your vision, but because there’s simply too much competing for your attention.
That’s the same idea I’m applying to Senyu’s socialization. By breaking experiences down and gradually increasing the distractions around her, I’m hoping to give her the best chance at processing the world around her and having positive experiences as we venture further into it. 🐾
