Each horse is carefully selected and patiently trained specifically for riders of all sizes and abilities. The first Sombrero stable was located at the current Estes Park site. In those days, trail rides went for $1.25 and the competition was stiff with over a dozen other riding stables in the area. Lots of enthusiasm, buckets of sweat, and much determination fueled the fire that led to Sombrero's

growth and expansion over the years

Rex chose to settle into the Estes Park area along with his wife, Queeda (Pat's sister). Queeda played an active role in the development of the business from the beginning of its existence. Today, the Sombrero, Inc. operation offer visitors the opportunity to experience riding–as early settlers did–in the natural beauty of the Colorado Rockies. You won't find any souvenir shops or commercialism at Sombrero. The family has been very careful to preserve the land in order to share the dramatic beauty with their guests.

Despite what some may think, Sombrero and the larger Rocky Mountain area are home to many exotic birds. Though the bald eagle often steals the show, western tanagers, magpies, robins, swallows, stellar jays, and more adorn our canopies with their splash of color and spunky personalities.

Shown here is the violet-green swallow - known to be acrobatic birds and secondary cavity nesters (often using our barns as nesting places) - and the robin, a bird known to eat worms by morning and berries by evening, giving them the quintessential status as “tipsy birds” due to the berries fermented state.

Come explore the forests of Estes Park on horseback at 📍Sombrero Stables and learn more about the amazing wildlife!

After a day on the trails, there’s no better way to end the night than under the Colorado stars ✨

It’s quiet nights like these that remind us how blessed we are to call this place home.

Come see Boot Hill at 📍Sombrero Stables 🤠

At the end of every season our wranglers choose their favorite horse and take their final ride with us… however, unlike the rides before, they hang up their boots to symbolize that their work here is done.

Over the years these trees have been filled with boots, scuffed and worn in from the summer days. Boot Hill is a celebration of all the hard work that goes into taking care of our horses and ensuring a safe, fun experience for our guests. Come ride through Boot Hill on our 1 and 2 hour trails and witness the wonderful tradition for yourself!
