🐶 Does your puppy need to be fully vaccinated before you start socializing them?

This is one of the most common questions new puppy owners have, and those first few months are such an important time for helping your puppy learn that the world is safe and manageable.

The good news: socialization doesn’t have to mean putting your puppy down at a busy dog park or letting them meet every dog they see.

It can be as simple as safely experiencing new people, sounds, surfaces, and places. That might mean watching bikes go by from a safe distance, hearing the vacuum cleaner, seeing someone wearing a hat, walking on different textures, or practicing gentle handling and grooming.

I put together a free Puppy Socialization Guide + Checklist for Comet ‘n’ Cloud clients, and I’d love to share it with other puppy families too. 🐾

Another amazing stay with Bear! 🐾

We had an absolute blast hosting Bear again! Between making a new friend with Benny the Bernese Mountain Dog, hitting the trail at Trillium Lake, and endless play sessions with Ozzie, it was a weekend full of pure joy and tired, happy pups

Thunderstorms can be pretty spooky for our four-legged friends, but Ozzie handled his first big camp storm like a champ! ⛈️🐾
We had to sit out a spectacular thunderstorm inside the car. He was a little shaky at first, but with some comfort and patience, he didn’t freak out and eventually settled down for a nice lap nap. Afterward, he got to enjoy the beautiful views at Timothy Lake! 🌲💧
When introducing your dog to intense weather or new environments, staying calm yourself and providing a safe, secure space makes all the difference.

A little late-week inspiration: celebrating a successful, low-stress 4th of July with Ozzie! While the big booms can be really tough for many dogs, a solid foundation of counter-conditioning allowed him to just relax and watch the show right from my lap.
How did your pups handle the holiday this year? What was their favorite safe spot?

Building a reliable "emergency cue" starts in low-distraction environments and gradually moves into high-arousal moments—like a good old-fashioned wrestling match! 🐾
In this clip, the audio is muted, but I am using Ozzie's attention cue to interrupt the play, followed immediately by a "down."
Can you tell when I cue his name and the down?
Teaching a solid emergency down during high-energy play builds incredible impulse control. It ensures you can get your dog's focus when it matters most, but you have to practice the behavior before you actually need it!

Meet our guest, Bear! 🐻
While puppy-sitting, we’re keeping things fun and functional by mixing in plenty of positive training and socialization. For puppies, building confidence is all about positive exposure and keeping training feeling like fun and games!
We’re checking off major milestones like puppy playtime, learning to relax around other dogs, and meeting different kinds of people. A huge thanks to Dirk for helping us check off a crucial socialization category: a person with a beard! 🧔‍♂️ Learning is always better with a little help from our friends.

Does your dog think their name is “No”? 🤔
We’ve all been there. Your dog is doing something they shouldn’t, and without thinking, you automatically yell, "No!"
To us, that word means a million different things: stop barking, get off the couch, stop jumping, or don't chew that shoe. But to your dog, a word used for everything ends up meaning nothing. It just becomes background noise.
Effective communication isn't about telling your dog what to stop doing—it’s about guiding them on what to do instead.
