🐾 A BIG UPDATE ON CHANCE 🐾
We’ve been a little quiet about Chance over the last day and a half because a lot has been unfolding behind the scenes. We’ve basically been holding our breath… but we’re finally able to share some really positive updates 🤍
As a forewarning, this is a long one!
On Wednesday afternoon, Chance unexpectedly underwent surgery to amputate her tail.
The necrosis around her hind end was progressing much faster than we or her veterinary team initially anticipated. We had to make a quick decision: surgery needed to happen immediately to remove her tail and the surrounding dead tissue before it had the opportunity to spread any further.
We trust our veterinary team implicitly, and the reality was scary. Waiting until next week could have allowed the necrosis to progress to a point where euthanasia became the only humane option. That wasn’t a chance any of us were willing to take.
Going into surgery, there was another major concern.
Because Chance’s injuries extend so high into her sacrum/spinal region, removing all of the damaged tissue meant there was a possibility she could lose whatever re**al tone and nerve function she had remaining. And since Chance hadn’t p**ped at all since coming into our care Monday, we didn’t even know for certain whether those nerves were functioning to begin with.
Nonetheless, we all took a chance on Chance 🍀✨
And we are ECSTATIC to share that her surgery was successful!!
But there was still one very important question remaining…
Could Chance p**p?
Well, Thursday morning brought us quite possibly the most exciting p**p we’ve ever seen 😂💩
SHE POOPED!
Rescue really changes your perspective on things. We can confidently say we’ve never been so excited to hear about p**p in our lives. That little bowel movement was a HUGE milestone and an incredibly encouraging sign for Chance.
We cannot say enough about the amazing team at Guardian Veterinary Care, with a very special shoutout to Dr. Gerard. She has been right alongside us rooting for Chance, made sure this urgent procedure happened when Chance needed it, and even brought in an additional veterinarian to assist her during the surgery. We are incredibly grateful for the lengths they’ve gone to for this tiny girl.
And we have another hopeful update.
For now, Chance gets to keep her left leg! 🥹
During her surgery, the decision was made to leave the fractured leg alone and focus on allowing everything else to heal first. Kittens can surprise us with their resilience, and because Chance is still so young and growing, we’re going to give her body some time and hold onto hope that the leg may heal better than expected before making any decisions about amputation.
Chance continues to surpass our expectations with each passing day.
Some may look at a case like hers and wonder whether taking the gamble is worth it. We absolutely believe it is. Especially for such a young kitten who has already shown us just how much fight she has in her.
And for the long Labor Day weekend, Chance couldn’t be in better hands. The veterinarian who assisted with her surgery is taking Chance home with him to personally oversee her recovery.
For the first time since Monday, we feel like we can finally exhale a little.
There’s still healing ahead and plenty we don’t know yet, but right now, Chance is in a really good spot.
