It took a village to save one very small, very determined kitten. Late one night this week, a tiny terrified but tenacious tabby with a badly broken leg was spotted slipping through the bushes at Walgreens—part ghost, part lightning—before vanishing behind the water machine.
And that’s when the story turned into something extraordinary: a Good Samaritan refused to let him disappear into the night, and the National Guard happened to be nearby and joined in, sweeping the area with a bright, steady spotlight. The kitten kept slipping away toward the danger, but the National Guard members kept him from escaping and his rescuer reached in and gently, carefully brought him out of the dark and into safety—earning herself a bruised arm but giving him a future he otherwise wouldn’t have had.
At the shelter, the truth of his injury was clear. His broken leg was severely infected and had lost blood flow. There was only one path forward: amputation.
Today, this brave little survivor—now named Wally from Walgreens—is safe and healing, beginning again on three perfect legs instead of four, and the very person who refused to give up on him that night will now foster him through recovery as his medical foster.
From the National Guard, to a stranger who became his lifeline, to our shelter and clinic teams who show up without hesitation—this is what it looks like when compassion gathers itself up and refuses to let a small life slip away. Sometimes the smallest creatures bring out the biggest kind of love 💕
