Wyatt Goes Camping

Wyatt went camping this weekend.

Technically, we all went camping—me, my granddaughters, and Wyatt.

But if you asked Wyatt, the trip was clearly organized for him.

There was a lake to supervise.

A campsite that required a complete nose-to-ground inspection.

Several squirrels whose activities seemed questionable at best.

And five humans who apparently needed a dachshund to make sure nobody wandered off without proper authorization.

Wyatt took the job seriously.

While the girls played in the water, he kept watch from shore—occasionally wading in just far enough to remind everyone that he could swim if circumstances required it.

They did not.

There were trails to explore, sticks to investigate, mysterious noises in the woods and approximately 427 smells that needed to be catalogued before sundown.

By evening, the lake settled down.

The water went still, the woods got quiet and we gathered back at camp tired, a little dirty and completely content.

Wyatt finally clocked out.

He curled up close to us with that particular kind of exhaustion that only comes from spending an entire day being extremely important.

And somewhere between the lake, the laughter of my granddaughters and one tired little red dachshund beside me, I was reminded why I love these simple weekends so much.

Nothing fancy.

Just family, a campfire, a lake and a little dog who will probably remember the squirrels better than the sunset.

Although I’ll remember both.
