What does my career as a dog groomer mean to me? It’s more than just giving your dog a cute haircut, it’s providing them a positive and safe experience as well. It is a commitment to their comfort and wellbeing. It is so many things that you don’t see when you drop them off. When I work with your pet I see them routinely and establish a genuine connection with them. They’ve all got quirks (and nicknames) and my favorite part of what can be a demanding job is the part where I form that bond. I love seeing growth from a fearful dog, appointment #1 they come in with trust issues and some sort of aggression towards the whole process and within a year of steady appointments I see them transform into a tolerant and sometimes even happy little buddy (this is not the case 100% of the time but happens more often than not). To me, my job revolves so much around that trust. You trust me with your pet, and then there is a different unspoken trust between your pet and I. And that’s what I come to work for every time I clock in.
There’s also the obvious parts of this job. You pick your dogs up cute and clean. The behind the scene cuddles and slobbery kisses. I love it! The not so obvious parts of dogs grooming are what it takes to make that happen. My body is put through the wringer every day, lifting/bending/stabilizing large dogs etc. My back and hands/wrists take the hit the hardest. Hair splinters, please don’t make me explain this one but they get stuck everywhere if you know you know. Hair essentially on everything, always… in the eyes, nose, mouth, clothes, transfers into my car. I’m used to it 😂 Equipment costs for good equipment is high, I don’t just buy shears, blades, and clippers once and use them forever. They break, they dull, they need sharpened, maintained, and sometimes replaced.. I pay for all of this out of pocket. I have skipped lunch breaks more often than not and stayed late to accommodate my clients. I have cried for the loss of a lot of your dogs and I’ve showed up to work the day after losing my own pets.
I am not disclosing any of this to complain. I just want people to understand that this job may appear to be easy but simply put a lot of the time it’s not. I love what I do and choose wholeheartedly to do it day after day. But when people ask me why there are price increases and changes, the answer is simply that I am not settling anymore. I have appreciated every opportunity up until this point and always will be grateful for the amazing people I’ve met along the way.. clients and previous coworkers I am talking about you ❤️
I will now be grooming at Pet Supplies Plus in the west Erie plaza. It’s a new location for me but I am promising the same great experiences for you and your pets that you’ve received up until here.
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for listening and hope to hear from you soon ✂️
PS. I am finally taking new clients!
