You’ve got lice! We have been seeing a high number of sheep, goats and cattle crawling with lice.

Lice are tiny brown/black insects that live their entire lives on their host animal. Lice eggs (nits) are white and can often be mistaken for dandruff. Some lice (known as sucking lice) suck the blood of their host animal and can cause profound, life-threatening anemia. Chewing lice can cause severe hair loss and itchiness. Lice populations often increase in the wintertime as host animals are in closer quarters with one another.

Make sure to regularly part the hair or wool of your animals in several different locations to check for lice. Lice often hide in the armpit and groin areas. They are visible to the naked eye and will be moving around close to the skin surface.

There are several options for treating lice that we carry in-store. Topical spray and pour-on options such as Synergized Delice, Co-Ral, and Ultraboss are effective and safe if used according to label instructions. Injectable worm treatments might be necessary for severe sucking lice infestations. Treatment should be repeated in 2 weeks time if living lice are still present on the animal. It is recommended to do one thorough clean out of the bedding and environment after the first treatment.

Feel free to contact us with any questions you have about ~non-human~ lice!

Despite the brief snow last week, the spring kidding season is upon us!

Disbudding is a way to remove and cauterize horn bud tissue from goat kids to prevent horn growth as they age. Here at Plateau Vet, we safely sedate the patients and numb the area with lidocaine (a local numbing medication) prior to using a hot iron to cauterize the horn buds. Disbudding is least painful and most effective when done early in a goat kid’s life. Swiss goat breeds (Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg, Oberhasli), La Mancha, and Nigerian Dwarf goat breeds have rapid horn growth and ideally would be disbudded as early as 7-10 days old. Boer and Nubian breeds have narrower horns that grow more slowly and can be done around 10-14 days of age. Some goats are born polled which is a genetic trait that means they will never develop horns. Polled goats usually have hair growth over the normal horn locations. We would be happy to help you assess if your goat kids are polled or not.

Long story short, disbudding is most successful and least painful for goat kids when done around 7-14 days of age! Please call our office if you have any questions about disbudding or would like to schedule an appointment.

We almost forgot to wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day. In honor of the holiday, we thought it be a good opportunity to mention that we offer vasectomies……..in livestock. A vasectomy is a safe and simple procedure that makes a male sterile (unable to breed) while maintaining typical male breeding behavior. This is accomplished by removing a small section of the tube that carries s***m from the testicles. Vasectomized males can help identify females in heat during the breeding season, giving the farmer an accurate breeding window to either artificially inseminate or introduce a male for natural service. This is a great tool for efficiently advancing genetics in the flock or herd. Following with the Valentine’s Day theme we also thought we’d share a recent photo of a very festive heart-shaped bull sc***um. This bull had a breeding soundness exam performed and passed with flying colors.

We are excited to announce our new and upgraded bovine foot trimming service. We got tired of wrestling cows on the ground with ropes, administering lots of sedatives, hurting our backs, and cursing way too much. We now have a hydraulic mobile trim chute that immobilizes cattle on their side, making hoof trims a piece of cake. Now is a great time to get foot trims scheduled if needed. The excess moisture from our winter and spring conditions can do a number on cow feet and make them more susceptible to conditions like foot rot. If you have any questions or want to schedule, give us a call and we would be happy to discuss setting up a visit for your farm.
