Today we said goodbye to Opal.
A tiny, sweet 13-year-old chihuahua who came to us from a rural city shelter, carrying far more than her small body should have had to bear.
After being diagnosed with left-sided heart failure and significant congestive heart failure, we made the heartbreaking decision to let her rest. There was no more comfort we could give her medically, only peace.
We are profoundly grateful that Opal did not spend her final days in a shelter. Because of this rescue and this community, she knew warmth, softness, safety, and love. She had a few beautiful weeks in a foster home, an AMAZING foster home who advocated for her well-being — weeks where she was cherished, held, and treated as she always deserved. That matters more than we can put into words.
Rescue work is often thankless. It is restless, fatiguing, emotionally and physically draining. The last eight months have been especially hard—finding foster homes, securing donations, and keeping up with the constant needs has taken a heavy toll. Losses like Opal’s weigh deeply, even when we know we did everything we could.
Because of these ongoing challenges, Vintage Paws will be closing indefinitely to intakes at this time. This decision comes from a place of honesty and necessity, not a lack of care.
Vintage Paws will remain a 501(c)(3) as we take time to regroup, rebrand, and thoughtfully redefine our mission focused on senior dogs in need. We owe that to the dogs we’ve loved and lost, and to those we hope to help in the future—when we are able to do so sustainably and responsibly.
Rest easy, sweet Opal.
You were loved. You were warm. You mattered.
