🐾❤️ A Labor of Love for Our Bentley Boy! ❤️🐾

If you’ve been following Bentley’s journey, you know just how much this boy has been through with his gastrointestinal issues. Over the past several weeks, I have spent countless hours researching, learning, adjusting ingredients, and figuring out exactly what works best for his sensitive tummy. And I can finally say that I feel like I’ve perfected his homemade diet! 🙌🐶

I’ve always leaned toward a more natural approach when it comes to my Frenchies, and knowing exactly what goes into their food gives me so much peace of mind. Fresh ingredients, carefully prepared meals, and lots of love go into every single batch! ❤️

I’ve even started saving our eggshells, properly cleaning, drying, and grinding them into a fine powder! 🥚 Did you know eggshells can be a great natural source of calcium for dogs when prepared correctly and used in the appropriate amounts? Just another little thing I’ve learned throughout this journey!

And thank goodness I have access to the BEST fresh farm eggs! 🥚🐓 thank you Katie 😉There is just something about knowing where your ingredients come from!

I’m not going to lie, preparing homemade meals takes a LOT of time, research, and dedication, especially when you’re trying to meet specific nutritional needs. But when it comes to my babies, there isn’t much I wouldn’t do for them.

Bentley has definitely taught me so much throughout this journey, and if all this extra work means keeping his tummy happy and giving him the best quality of life possible, then every minute spent in that kitchen is worth it! 🥹❤️

🐾🎉 HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY TO CHANEL & ARCHIE! 🎂❤️🐾

Things have been SUPER busy here at Royal Buckeye French Bulldogs lately, and I completely forgot to make a very special birthday post for two of our babies! 🥹❤️ Chanel and Archie turned SIX years old! 🎉🐶 Archie is living his absolute best life down in Kentucky with his amazing family and his brother, and we couldn’t be happier knowing just how loved and spoiled he is! ❤️ As for our sweet Chanel, well, she’s one of our OGs here at Royal Buckeye, and this girl will forever hold such a special place in our hearts! 🥰 She’s been with us through so many memories and milestones, and we couldn’t imagine our lives without her. She’s truly the BEST, and we love her more than words can express! It’s so hard to believe these two are already SIX! Where in the world does the time go?! 🥹 Watching our babies grow older is always so bittersweet, but knowing they are living happy, loved, and spoiled lives makes it all worthwhile. Here’s to many more years of love, snuggles, and memories! Happy belated birthday, Chanel and Archie! We love you both so much! 🎂🐾❤️

Here at Royal Buckeye French bulldogs we’ve always believed that every dog is different, and sometimes you have to adjust along the way to give them exactly what they need. For those of you who have been following Bentley’s journey, we’re having to change things up a little bit for him. I’m definitely more of a naturalist when it comes to my babies, so over the last couple of weeks I’ve spent countless hours researching a gastrointestinal-friendly diet and also spoke with a holistic doctor to make sure what I put together was appropriate for Bentley and everything his GI system has been through.

I’ve literally spent the last few hours in the kitchen preparing and portioning his food because, at this point, I’ll do whatever it takes to get this boy’s belly back on track! ❤️ For a while, his homemade meals will consist of chicken and chicken broth for a gentle, lean source of protein and hydration; sweet potatoes and rice for easily digestible carbohydrates and energy; green beans, carrots, and peas for added fiber, vitamins, and nutrients; and hard-boiled eggs for another source of protein and nutrients. We’ll also be adding digestive enzymes to help support digestion and nutrient absorption, along with salmon oil for omega-3 fatty acids.

After everything Bentley’s little body has been through, my goal is to keep his diet simple, nourishing, lower in fat, and as gentle on his GI system as possible while we continue to let his gut heal. This has definitely been a learning experience, and I know we may have to make adjustments along the way depending on how his body responds. But if spending hours researching, cooking, prepping, and portioning meals is what it takes to help our Bentley boy feel like himself again, then that’s exactly what this dog mama is going to do. 🐾💙

So many rescued French Bulldogs come from heartbreaking backgrounds, whether they’ve spent their lives in cages being bred over and over again, suffered physical abuse, or simply never experienced what it means to be loved. ❤️ When our baby Buddha, from Armani and Maizlee, went to his forever home, he joined a family that had recently experienced the unimaginable heartbreak of losing their beloved little girl Beans in a horrific accident. Their rescued Frenchie Olive was left grieving, confused, and struggling with the loss of her best friend. But LOOK AT THESE TWO NOW! 🥹🐾 Watching Buddha and Olive slowly become besties absolutely melts my heart! Sometimes another dog can bring a kind of comfort that we humans simply cannot provide. Buddha came into this home at just the right time, bringing puppy kisses, companionship, and a little bit of happiness back into her world. I truly believe they needed each other, and seeing their bond grow is EVERYTHING! This is what makes my heart so full as a breeder. It’s not just about finding our babies wonderful homes; it’s about the love, healing, and happiness they bring to the families and furry siblings waiting for them. ❤️🐶💕

Well, we brought Bentley home, but unfortunately, it looks like this is not going to be an easy month. ❤️‍🩹 When we went to pick him up, the vet tech told us he hadn’t vomited or had any diarrhea, so we should be good to go. Of course, while we’re sitting in the waiting room, Bentley decides to vomit—and there were blood clots in it. 😩 Once we got into the car, David said, “Please check his bottom, I think he’s bleeding.” It was hard to tell at the time, but once we got home, he started pooping nonstop, and there was bright red blood in his stool. Talk about frustrating and scary after everything this poor boy has already been through.

We’ve been keeping him separated from the other dogs because we don’t want him playing too hard, and we’ve noticed that he gets nauseous very easily right now. He is currently on NINE medications, all of which have to be timed perfectly throughout the day. So. Many. Pills. 🤦🏼‍♀️ And, of course, Bentley has decided he wants absolutely nothing to do with taking them. If we try putting them too far back in his throat, he gets nauseous or throws them back up, so naturally I had to get creative and make my own little “pill pockets” for him. 😂

He’s also on a prescription canned-food diet that his vet would like him to stay on long-term. Anyone who knows me knows I’ve already started researching. 😂 My goal is eventually to get him back to a fresh/raw-style diet if his veterinary team feels it’s appropriate, although we may need to cook his protein and make some permanent changes based on what his GI system can tolerate.

For now, we’re taking this one day at a time. I’ll be calling his vet first thing in the morning about the bleeding, and he is scheduled to have repeat bloodwork in 10 days. We are incredibly thankful to have our boy home, but we definitely still have a road ahead of us. Please continue to keep Bentley in your thoughts and prayers. We just want our sweet boy feeling like himself again. ❤️‍🩹🐾

💙BENTLEY UPDATE💙

It has been a very long and emotional 72 hours, and for the last couple of days, Bentley’s fate has truly felt up in the air. I’m not going to lie—I had started preparing myself for the worst. Yesterday morning, Bentley spiked a fever over 104°, and although he finally had a bowel movement without diarrhea, they gave him an e***a to help clear out as much waste as possible while trying to get his liver enzymes under control. Unfortunately, around 10:30 yesterday morning, he vomited and there were blood clots present, which was absolutely terrifying. But then, just an hour and a half later, our boy ate lunch on his own. We also received the results of the ultrasound that had been sent to a radiologist for review. It showed mild hypomotile gastritis, while his small intestine and colon appeared normal. There were some changes involving his pancreas consistent with slight pancreatitis, and his liver showed hepatopathy with chronic inflammation. They also want to check his clotting factors to make sure he isn’t at increased risk for bleeding. His adrenal glands looked normal, and there were some changes noted in his lymph nodes. His GI testing will hopefully give us even more answers and help determine what treatment he will need moving forward.

Our vet told us that this morning’s bloodwork was going to be extremely important. If Bentley’s ALT continued to climb while his white blood cell count dropped, we were going to have to have a very serious conversation because his immune system might simply not be strong enough to fight whatever is happening. If his ALT came down and his white blood cells increased, it would tell us that the treatment was working. Needless to say, I spent yesterday sick to my stomach thinking that today I might have to make a decision that no pet owner ever wants to make. But this morning, we finally got the news we have been praying for. His doctor called and was actually very surprised by his bloodwork—Bentley’s white blood cell count is back within the normal range, and his ALT has decreased by almost 50%! He remains on IV antibiotics, fluids, nausea medication, and medication to coat and protect his stomach from acid. His vet is hopeful that because the ultrasound did not show significant structural liver damage, his body may have been dealing with a bacterial burden for some time, and the recent Giardia infection may have simply overwhelmed his system.

The plan now is to begin transitioning Bentley to oral medications this afternoon and watch him closely for the next 24 hours. If he continues to tolerate everything and his numbers remain headed in the right direction, we may finally get to bring our baby home tomorrow. ❤️ The next month is going to be a lot—he will be on numerous medications that have to be carefully timed around one another and his meals—but that feels like such a small price to pay to have our boy coming home. Bentley has fought so hard these last few days. He’s got this, and we’ve got him. Thank you to everyone who has prayed for him, checked on us, and kept our sweet boy in your thoughts. Please keep those prayers coming—we’re finally feeling hopeful again. 🙏🐾❤️

💔 Please keep our Bentley boy in your prayers. 💔

I feel like we just cannot catch a break with this sweet boy. Bentley is hospitalized again, and this time we are extremely worried. A couple of weeks ago, he was treated for Giardia and we truly thought we were finally getting him back to himself. Unfortunately, over the last couple of days he started becoming nauseous again, and last night he developed a high fever. I took him to the vet first thing this morning, and his blood work is horrible. He is showing signs of becoming septic, there is thickening of his stomach lining, and his liver enzymes are sky high.

Bentley will be hospitalized for at least the next three days while they try to figure out exactly what is happening. He is having an ultrasound that will be sent out to be read, along with additional testing, and in the meantime he will be on IV antibiotics and fluids around the clock.

What makes this even scarier is that our vet said it’s possible whatever is going on may have been underlying from the very beginning, back when we originally thought Bentley had a blockage. Between the medications he received then and the antibiotics he was on while being treated for Giardia, it may have kept this underlying issue at bay. Now that he has been off antibiotics for about a week and a half, whatever is happening has come back with a vengeance.

As a breeder, I spend so much of my time caring for puppies and worrying about everyone else’s babies, but these dogs are our babies first. Leaving Bentley at the hospital today knowing how sick he is absolutely broke my heart. 💔 I just want answers, I want the antibiotics to work, and most of all, I want our goofy, sweet Bentley boy back home where he belongs.

Please say an extra prayer for him tonight—for answers, for healing, and for his little body to fight whatever is going on. 🙏🏻🐾❤️ We love you so much, Bentley. Keep fighting, buddy.
