Meet Rocco and Ricci, the dynamic guinea pig duo!

These two gentlemen are social, heckin' chonky, and would absolutely love to help you out with those baby carrots you bought with every intention of eating yourself... but somehow an ice cream sandwich happened instead. (No judgment. Same.)

Rocco and Ricci are looking for a home where they can snack, squeak, and charm their way into your heart.

Zola has made truly incredible progress since entering training and a structured home environment. šŸ’›

Over the past several months, she has gained an amazing amount of confidence and no longer feels the need to react to barking, lunging, or overstimulating dogs while out on walks. Situations that once caused stress and over-arousal barely faze her now, a huge milestone for this sweet girl.

Zola thrives with structure, consistency, and clear boundaries. With the right guidance, she has learned how to settle, decompress, and simply enjoy being a dog instead of constantly living in a heightened state of anxiety.

She would do best in a lower-traffic home with children over 10 years old due to her size and excitement level. Zola is looking for an active family that understands large breed dogs and is willing to give her patience and time as she adjusts and settles into a new routine.

She is incredibly food motivated, eager to learn, and has so much love to give. Beneath it all, Zola is simply a wonderful dog who was not given the easiest start in life, and we are so proud of how far she has come. 🐾

Dogs like Zola are also a reminder of just how important behavioral support and training resources are within shelters. Behavioral care is just as life-saving as medical care. For many dogs, access to training, decompression, structure, and patience can be the difference between continuing to struggle and finally having the opportunity to thrive in a home.

We have an Evelyn update! šŸŽ‰

Her new family says, "Just wanted to share an update! Willow (formerly Evelyn) loves being an office dog (after a good long walk/romp to get nice and tired). She is really just the best ever. As suspected, she’s been loving the couch!"

Congratulations to Evelyn, now Willow on her happily ever after!

Charlie would like to formally request some yummy dry dog food options… and apparently paper towels too.

Not that he really cares about the paper towels part, but the humans insist they’re important for cleaning around the shelter. And since the humans are also responsible for feeding him snacks and giving him snuggles… Charlie supposes we should keep them happy too.

If you’d like to help Charlie and his shelter friends, donations of dry dog food and paper towels are always greatly appreciated! Feel free to donate from your own home or bring supplies directly to the shelter. šŸ’›šŸ¾

Shelter life is never ideal for any dog, but especially not for sensitive souls like Basil, who has already been through so much in his young life. Thankfully, Basil found the perfect safe haven outside of the shelter with his incredible foster family. šŸ’›

Basil arrived to us from Louisiana, and the noise and stress of kennel life quickly became overwhelming for him. Walking back to his kennel was so frightening that he would freeze in corners, shake, and even urinate from fear. We knew his stress levels were simply too high, and we couldn’t stand by and watch him struggle. So, off to foster he went.

Basil’s story is also an important reminder that behavioral care in shelters is just as vital as medical care. Fear, stress, and emotional wellbeing matter, and for dogs like Basil, the right environment can completely change their quality of life.

Since entering foster care, Basil has truly started to blossom. He gains an incredible sense of comfort and confidence from being around other dogs, and his foster brother has become the best mentor he could ask for. Between couch snuggles, playtime with his new family, and learning that the world isn’t quite so scary, Basil is finally getting the chance to just be a dog.

Because of how much security Basil finds in canine companionship, a home with another dog is a must for this sweet boy. He’s looking for a patient, loving family that will continue helping him build confidence and feel safe at his own pace.

We are so grateful to his foster mom for giving him this opportunity and cannot wait to see what the future holds for him in his forever home.

Here's some great information as to why this program is so important for our community!

Here's some great information as to why this program is so important for our community!

Give a pint, help a paw! During the month of May, when you donate blood, platelets, or plasma and share a photo of your pet or mention ā€œPints for Pawsā€, a bag of dog or cat food will be donated to the Upper Valley Humane Society, via West Lebanon Feed & Supply.

The DHMC Blood Donor Program shares something in common with our furry friends in animal shelters.
* We constantly need blood donors to replenish our blood supply.
* In animal shelters, there is a constant need to replenish the food supply.

The High Cost of Feeding Shelter Dogs:
* Enormous Volume: Managing a shelter requires a staggering amount of food. For context, a medium-sized shelter with around 150 dogs can easily burn through seventy-two 40-pound bags of kibble every single month.
* The "Diet Consistency" Rule: Shelters try to avoid feeding dogs a random mix of different donated brands. Rapidly switching a dog’s diet can cause severe gastrointestinal distress (diarrhea and vomiting), spreading sickness and increasing the cleaning burden on staff.
* Life-Stage Needs: Shelters cannot use a "one size fits all" feeding plan. Puppies, pregnant or lactating mothers, and senior dogs all require specialized, high-calorie, or easy-to-digest formulas to stay healthy under stress.

Food is More Than Nutrition—It’s Behavioral Therapy:
* Stress Reduction: Shelters are incredibly loud, chaotic, and stressful environments for dogs. Feeding them on a strict, predictable schedule is one of the easiest ways to lower their cortisol (stress) levels.

So please give our Dartmouth Health team a call at 603-653-3775 or schedule an appointment online at the link below. 🐾

Kooper, DHMC volunteer therapy dog, thanks you for the support.

Today, Axel is helping us remember and honor the brave men, women, and military working dogs who served our country with courage and loyalty. ā¤ļøšŸ’™

From detecting explosives to search and rescue work to standing beside their handlers through unimaginable situations, these dogs served with unwavering devotion and heart.

This Memorial Day, we pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by both humans and animals in service to others.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful holiday from all of us at UVHS.

Meet Famous Amos - the cutest little chiweenie with a goofy personality that’s guaranteed to keep you smiling. šŸ’›

Amos made the long journey to us from Alabama, and through it all, he never lost his playful, affectionate spirit. He’s the kind of dog who finds joy in the simple things: belly rubs, toys, hanging out with other dogs, and most importantly… being close to his people.

Whether he’s trotting around looking for fun or curling up nearby for attention, Amos has a way of making himself impossible not to love.

Amos does have a mild heart murmur and suspected heart disease that is currently being managed with medication. His treatment will need to continue in his future home, but he’s still very much enjoying life and all the love that comes with it. šŸ’•
