What you did right this month — and what the yard did with it.

You left the leaf litter under the shrubs.
→ Firefly larvae completed the pupal stage underneath it.

You left the dead branch on the oak.
→ A chickadee nested in the cavity and fed her chicks from it all month.

You didn't spray the caterpillar web.
→ Dozens of bird species fed from it. The tree releafed on its own.

You left a bare patch of soil near the fence.
→ Ground-nesting bees moved in.

You left a dish of wet mud near the wall.
→ The barn swallow rebuilt.

You didn't mow the back edge.
→ The tall grass gave fireflies a place to flash and fledglings a place to hide.

🌿 None of this cost anything. No purchase, no project, no permit.

The things you didn't do mattered more than the things you did. The leaf litter you didn't rake. The branch you didn't cut. The edge you didn't mow.

The yard noticed 🐾

A somewhat long post, but an important one!

Friends and supporters of the Kelley Family Homestead nursery- some of you know this and others may not. In late October 2025, I converted my farmstand into Enfield Community Cupboard- a Little Free Pantry dedicated to providing food to our community 24/7, no questions asked. The need in our community is there, and the pantry serves 5-20 families every day. It is commmunity supported, friends and neighbors donate food and even some clothing items to support our community. Some even donate their time to help organize, restock, and make the odd delivery to someone who cannot get out.

The Enfield Community Cupboard is a labor of love, a hub for kindness and support in a time when everything seems to be too much, too fast, and too expensive. What started to bridge the gap during the SNAP benefits shutdown has turned into a whole thing, and I am glad it did.

It does, however, take a fair bit of my time-10-20 hours a week. Time I gladly give, to make sure no one in our community is going hungry. Because I am only human, and cant do everything (*gasp*) 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I have decided to take a sabbatical from the Kelley Family Homestead Nursery this year, in order to keep the Enfield Community Cupboard going in such a time of uncertainty and need. It was a tough decision, but I feel it was the right one for right now.

I am grateful to all of you for your support these last few years, and hope to see you again when the Nursery reopens! In the meantime, if you would like to help support the Community Cupboard by donating food or volunteering time, I will leave the link to the page in the comments. Or you could start a Little Free Pantry in your own neighborhood! Stay amazing, my friends! 💖💖💖💖💖

Did you know you can stream shows over Hoopla from the Enfield Public Library? Check out the Curiosity Stream BingePass for loads of awesome science, and I especially recommend Insect Apocalypse, definitely worth a watch, and has some commentary from Doug Tallamy!
