Rancho Coastal Humane Society

Rancho Coastal Humane Society Saving lives, supporting pets & people, and finding forever homes since 1960. RCHS is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
(422)

Dedicated to the San Diego community since 1960, Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) was founded by animal lover Maria K. Lloyd who purchased property off a small dirt road in Encinitas, California. At that time the shelter was home to dogs, cats, birds, goats, sheep and even a b***o named Milton. Today, that dirt road is the I-5, but the shelter still resides in the small yellow house where Lloy

d once lived. RCHS is known for its personalized pet adoption process and humane education. We’re also recognized for programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, including the Animal Safehouse Program, pet food banks and community outreach that all provide a “helping paw” to people in crisis. At RCHS we believe everyone should be able to keep their beloved pets safe, healthy and by their sides. We have no government contracts and are supported only by individual donors, grants and foundations, and our Thrift Shop. Based on statistical reporting through the national database, Shelter Animals Count, RCHS currently maintains a 100% Live Release or Save Rate. This refers to the percentage of animals leaving the shelter either through adoption, transfer or return to owner. For more information on the number of people and animals served, please visit our annual highlights report. Part of the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition, RCHS abides by the pledge that NO healthy, treatable animal will ever be euthanized for time or space. Our shelter stands with the Coalition and abides by the Asilomar Accord when it comes to serving this community and its animals!

Happy Tails Update: Quokka 💕🐾

Quokka’s adopter says she is absolutely thriving in her new home! In this photo, she’s resting after a busy day — apparently it’s exhausting being that cute.

Her adopter shared that after having dogs most of their life, they can’t remember one as affectionate as Quokka. They feel incredibly lucky to have her as part of the family, and we couldn’t be happier for all of them. 💛

Help Us Share Kelly’s Story to Find Her a Home ❤️

Senior dogs like Kelly have so much love left to give.

At 12 years old, Kelly is looking for a calm, patient home where she can finally relax and just be herself. After losing her owner and struggling in the shelter environment, Kelly has spent the last 18 months in foster learning that people can be safe, gentle, and kind.

She may be shy at first, but Kelly loves being near her people, sunbathing, solving treat puzzles, and quietly following her foster around the house. Every little bit of trust she gives feels extra special.

There are so many benefits to adopting a senior pet. Older dogs are often already potty trained, lower energy, more independent, and past the chaotic puppy phase. What you see is usually what you get — and many senior pets settle into home life beautifully. Most of all, they’re simply looking for comfort, companionship, and someone to love them through their golden years.

Kelly’s adoption fee has been anonymously donated, and her foster believes she’s finally ready for her forever home.

Please share Kelly’s story to help us find the loving home she deserves. 🐾

Rancho Coastal Humane Society is honored to be selected as a 2026 grant recipient of the Rancho Santa Fe Women’s Fund and to celebrate alongside fellow nonprofit partners at the organization’s recent awards ceremony and luncheon.

Support from the Rancho Santa Fe Women’s Fund () will help sustain our Veterinary Care Program, which provides low-income seniors with financial assistance, resources, and access to essential veterinary care, helping keep pets healthy and families together.

We are deeply grateful for this investment in compassionate care for people and pets in our our community.

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave service members — both human and canine — who served our country. 🇺🇸

Rancho Coastal Humane Society is proud to host one of only eight Military Working Dog Memorials in the nation, and the first private memorial west of the Mississippi. The memorial features Chyba, a German Shepherd who served as a narcotics detection dog with the 95th MP Battalion in Germany.

Pictured in front of the memorial is Beef Wellington — a lovable 4-year-old hound mix looking for a forever home of his own. Please share to help this sweet boy find the family he deserves.

Please note: RCHS is closed today in observance of Memorial Day and will resume normal hours on Wednesday, May 27th.
