Why we recommend pre-surgical bloodwork for every dog and cat 🐶🐱

When your pet is scheduled for surgery, one of the most important steps we take before anesthesia is running pre-surgical bloodwork. Even pets that are young, active, and appear perfectly healthy can have underlying conditions that aren’t visible on a physical exam alone.

🩸 It checks vital organ function
Bloodwork tells us how well the liver and kidneys are working, two organs that play a major role in processing anesthesia and medications.

🩺It looks for hidden problems
Anemia, infection, inflammation, dehydration, and clotting concerns may not show outward signs but can significantly affect how safely a pet undergoes surgery.

💉 It helps us tailor anesthesia to your pet
Every pet is different. Bloodwork allows us to choose the safest anesthetic drugs and dosages specifically for your pet, reducing risks during the procedure.

📊 It creates a healthy baseline
Running bloodwork when your pet is healthy gives us something to compare to later in life if illness ever arises, this can be incredibly helpful for early detection.

💰 We understand that pre-surgical bloodwork is an additional expense. However, this testing can help prevent unexpected complications, delays, or emergencies during and recovering from anesthesia which can be far more costly (and stressful) than the bloodwork itself. Most importantly, it allows us to make informed decisions that protect your pet’s safety.
