Some of you don’t want to hear this, but you gotta. Not every dog is built for bite work. I don’t care if both parents were IGP3 x1000 and they exclusively ate sleeves & suits, I don’t care if you’re a breeder and want to get into protection sports with a dog you bred & it was anointed by the pope. I don’t care how bad you want it, I care how bad the dog wants it. A common myth is “I have a GSD/Malinois/Dutchie, so it will excel in bite sports”. The waters are muddied with questionable breeders producing weak & unstable dogs, but selling them better than your local used car salesman. I won’t sugar coat the traits your dog is showing me. I won’t force your dog to bite when it’s clearly uncomfortable. I won’t promise anything more than meeting your dog where they’re at, and bringing out their best. All this to say, if you’re serious about getting into bite sports or protection training: go to a club, meet the dogs & handlers, get to know lines and breeders that are producing successful dogs. Preferably, before you pick a dog/puppy to start this journey with. Love your dog first & the sport second ❤️
