when it comes to our puppies it isn’t just about selling a puppy, it’s raising a puppy for someone that wants a partner in crime, a family member and a best friend.
Before the puppies are born there’s a lot of thought that goes into them such as their parents health testing. Each dog in our breeding program completes health testing through OFA to ensure the structure of the dog is something you want to see in your furry friend. Health testing acts as a baseline standard to avoid painful or costly genetic disorders. We test each dog on their hips, elbows, heart, eyes and thyroid as well as completing a full genetic testing panel to avoid breeding 2 carriers of the same genetic traits together to help our puppy buyers avoid having a dog that costs thousands in vet bills because of a genetic condition that could have been avoided.
Not only are we testing the genetics and structure of our dogs but we are also testing their instincts, train-ability and temperament of our dogs through training, hunt tests and field work to determine if these dogs should be bred. All of that takes place by 2 years old with hunt tests maybe taking longer for the goal we want achieved.
Then we focus on what dogs we want to pair together for a breeding, dogs that compliment each other genetically, structurally and temperamentally. For example we took our female Gracie, who is a high energy dog in and out of work who takes a little bit to shut-off and bred her with Thror who has a great shut-off after work is done but still loves his job in hunt tests. Once we choose a stud we have to decide if we want to do live cover or artificial insemination, if we decide live cover we are usually traveling hours to go to the stud, and have to make the trip twice to drop off and pick up our female. If we decide Ai then we need to make sure the timing is perfect for our female to be bred with the best chances of conceiving, meaning continually checking progesterone levels at the vet.
Once our mama dogs are pregnant we up her feed and give daily vitamins to give both mom and babies the best nutrition. When our moms go into labor we are there every step of the way, helping her stay calm, making sure she is able to easily have the puppies, and making sure each puppy eats. When the puppies are born they get a color ID and take their weight, which we will continue doing every week to make sure they are at healthy weights. Our pups go through Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) from 3-16 days old to kick start their numerological and physical development, we do this by flipping puppies in all directions for a small period of time and “tickle” their toes and set them on a damp cloth.
As puppies grow they are introduced to different things such as the outside, kids, our other dogs, bird wings, water and they may go on field trips to low traffic areas. They also make a trip to the vet to get full checks, their first set of vaccines and microchips. We start litter box training/ crate training our puppies as well to help them adjust to living in the home, we start this at 4-5 weeks. When puppies go to their home we help each family pick the puppy that will best complement their lifestyle.
What I’m trying to say is we pour every bit of ourselves into each litter and each puppy, from money to time and we do all of this to give each family the best possible outcome for their puppy, after these pups go home we love to see all the updates and are happy to help if any problem arises, from training questions to helping rehome if needed. We keep supporting our puppies long after they have left and truly care about each puppy we raise.
