Update on Henrietta, Moose, and Spot! 🐾

The boys got their first round of vaccines and a weigh-in this week — they're 7 to 8 weeks old now and turning into a couple of certified knuckleheads, in the very best way. Henrietta, meanwhile, remains an absolute sweetheart... though if we're being honest, she's starting to look at her sons like she's more than ready for a little space. Motherhood has its limits, even for the best moms.

Their foster mom has been giving all three a clean, safe, and soft place to land while we get everything in order, and we can't thank her enough.

As a reminder, this little family came to us as part of the multi-agency rescue out of Waverly, where local police worked with area shelters to place over a dozen dogs after a difficult situation. Chet, one of the dogs from that same case, already found his happy ending — and Henrietta, Moose, and Spot are getting closer every day.

All three will be available for adoption soon. Keep an eye on our page — you won't want to miss it.

JCPenney at the Arnot Mall is teaming up with us for a Towel & Rug Drive this weekend, and we're grateful for the partnership. From Friday, September 4th through Sunday, September 6th, JCPenney is running a bath towel, kitchen towel, and bath rug sale (buy one, get two free), and we're asking anyone shopping the sale to consider picking up an extra new bath towel, hand towel, or bath mat to donate.

New items only, please. You can drop your donation right at JCPenney, Arnot Mall, 3300 Chambers Rd in Horseheads, any time during the sale.

Every towel and mat becomes bedding for the animals in our care or gets put to work in daily shelter cleaning. It's a small ask that makes a real difference for the animals waiting with us right now.

Meet Poppy, a six-month-old domestic shorthair with excellent manners and a story that starts on a back deck in Corning.

Poppy turned up outside the home of Mary Farmer, Corning's City Clerk and a longtime friend of the Chemung County SPCA. She runs the city's free spay/neuter program for cats and champions our mission every chance she gets. Poppy was clearly loved before she arrived: she's spayed, vaccinated, has had her nails trimmed, and settled in with Mary like she'd always belonged there. But Mary can't keep her, and she's hoping to find Poppy a good home herself rather than leave anything to chance.

Poppy is affectionate with people and has some genuinely impressive house manners. Mary reports she stays off counters and tables entirely, no small feat for a kitten. She's not looking to share her home with other pets, so she'll do best as the only animal in the house, with someone who wants her to be their one and only.

Whoever adopts Poppy won't be starting from scratch. Mary is sending her along with a litter box, litter, food, and toys.

Meet Akelia, a one-year-old domestic medium hair who has never met a stranger. Walk up to her kennel and she'll flop right onto her back, all four paws in the air, asking for a belly rub before you've even said hello. She's got a playful streak too, batting at toys with total focus one minute and rolling around like a goofball the next.

Akelia gets along with everyone. She's comfortable around kids, easygoing with other cats, and just as friendly with dogs. If you're looking for a cat who fits into a busy, mixed-species household without a fuss, she's about as low-drama as it gets.

She's sweet, she's funny, and she's endlessly curious about whatever you're doing, whether that's reading on the couch or unpacking groceries. Akelia isn't shy about asking for attention, and once she gets it, she makes it very clear how much she appreciates you.

Meet Dakota, a seven-year-old good boy with a permanent grin and an easygoing attitude that makes everything look fun. He's built solid (he'd call himself a "big guy," we might say a little chonky), and he wears it well, whether he's lounging in a sunbeam or trotting along on a walk like he owns the sidewalk.

Dakota is affectionate through and through. He leans into pets, soaks up attention, and seems genuinely happy just to be near his people. He gets along well with cats, so a multi-species household is very much on the table. With other dogs, he's a little more particular. He knows who he vibes with and who he doesn't, so a meet and greet helps us find him the right match.

He does best in a home with kids six and up, giving him room to be his relaxed self without feeling crowded.

If you're looking for a steady, affectionate companion who's always up for whatever the day brings, Dakota might be exactly who you've been waiting to meet.

Chet found his home. 🎉

This sweet, easygoing boy — who came to us as part of a multi-agency rescue out of Waverly — was adopted yesterday by a former CCSPCA volunteer who knows exactly what kind of care and patience a dog like Chet deserves. During their meet-and-greet, Chet hit it off immediately with his new best friend, an older dog already in the home, and honestly, we couldn't have scripted a better match.

Chet's journey is a good reminder of what's possible when a community works together. The Waverly Police Department went above and beyond for these dogs, reaching out to shelters across the region rather than letting a difficult situation become a dead end. Bradford County SPCA stepped up to take part of the group. We stepped up to take Chet, along with a mom and her two puppies. And now, one by one, these dogs are landing exactly where they belong — in homes that love them.

From the officers who made the call, to the shelters who said yes, to the families opening their doors: this is what it looks like when everyone shows up for the animals who need it most.

Congratulations, Chet. Go be spoiled.

We are overflowing with gratitude for the team at Melissa L. Brown Orthodontics for Children and Adults.

Throughout August, Dr. Brown's office ran a donation drive for the animals in our care. Patients were encouraged to bring in supplies, donation boxes collected cash at the front desk, and on August 6, the office hosted a carwash to raise even more (you may have seen the video we shared from that day).

Yesterday, staff from the office arrived with the results: a check for $1,093, and a carload of supplies that included dog and cat food and treats, blankets, toys, bedding, leashes and collars, cat litter, bowls, paper towels, and scrubs our kennel and clinic staff can put to immediate use.

A local orthodontic practice serving families in Corning, Elmira, and Horseheads spent an entire month organizing this effort on our behalf, and their patients showed up for it. That kind of community partnership is exactly what keeps our shelter running: it means cleaner kennels, fuller bowls, and a more comfortable stay for every dog and cat waiting for their next home.

Dr. Brown and her staff have been warm, kind, and generous from the first conversation to the final delivery. We are proud to call them partners in this work.

Meet Carhartt, a 7-month-old domestic shorthair who came to us as a stray found hanging around a property, no history, no story, just a young cat figuring things out on his own. The first few days here, he was quiet and cautious while he got his bearings. That didn't last long. Once he found his footing, an outgoing, people-loving side came out, and he's been eager to interact ever since. He still carries a touch of reserve; he's friendly rather than in-your-face, the type who warms up fast but likes to make his own approach.

Because his background is unknown, we can't speak to how he'd do with dogs or other cats. It's not a strike against him, just information he doesn't have a paper trail for yet. A home with a bit of patience for the unknowns would suit him well. He's recommended for households with older kids, who can match his gentle, still-a-little-shy energy.

Fall showed up right on schedule, and it brought six kittens to prove it: C***r, Squash, Spice, Maple, Latte, and Clove.

At three months old, this crew is still figuring out the world, so don't be surprised if they're a little quiet at first. Give them a minute. Watch a soft blink turn into a headbutt, and a headbutt turn into a kitten who won't leave your lap. That's C***r's whole personality in about ninety seconds. Squash takes a bit longer to warm up but rewards patience with serious snuggle commitment. Spice, Maple, Latte, and Clove are all working through the same shy-to-sweetheart arc, each on their own timeline.

The good news: every one of these kittens has tested comfortable around kids, cats, and dogs, so however your household is put together, there's a good chance one of them fits right in.

When we asked for help with Smoke's dental surgery, you didn't just meet the goal. You exceeded it, by a lot. That surplus has been sitting in our Tooth Fairy Fund, waiting for exactly this moment.

Meet Mikey, Tucker, and Tyson.

Mikey (10, Havanese) and Tucker (9, Maltese) came to us together after their owner passed away, and they found their new home together too. Tyson (6, Chihuahua) came to us separately, after his own owner passed, and found a home of his own. All three have since been adopted, but their story with us isn't finished. We're still covering their full dental work, and Tyson's neuter surgery, because good care doesn't stop at adoption.

This round doesn't have Shelter Outreach Services or Cornell involved, so the full cost falls on us and on the surplus already sitting in the fund from Smoke's story, and it won't stretch far enough on its own.

Here's what we love about this: the money you gave for Smoke is already working. It just takes a team effort to finish the job for three dogs instead of one.
