We all love giving our pups a treat now and then, but many common foods offer hidden dangers. While you likely know what your dog needs to avoid, everyone at your barbeque may not.

Be sure to talk to visitors this summer about what your dog can and cannot eat. Sometimes good intentions end with high vet bills or worse!

Xylitol in particular is a major danger hidden in foods you wouldn't expect, including sugar-free or low sugar items. It is used as a sweetener in many products, including gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. Xylitol can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and liver damage depending on the amount ingested. Initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination, which can progress to seizures quickly.

Watch out for:
-Chewing gum and mints
-Baked goods and desserts
-Specialty peanut butter brands
-Jams, jellies, and syrups
-Diet foods and protein bars
-Chewable supplements such as melatonin tablets and vitamins gummies

Manufacturers may not list it as "xylitol" so be on the lookout for these aliases on ingredient labels:
-Birch sugar
-Birch bark extract
-XyliteSugar alcohols

As always, if you suspect your pet has eaten any of the following foods, note the amount ingested and contact your veterinarian or poison control at (888) 426-4435.

By now you've heard about how aggressive ticks are this year. While it's common practice to check your dog after walks in the woods or romps through long grass, these days you should give them (and yourself!) a once-over after any outside time.

To safely remove a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool to grip it as close to your dog's skin as possible. Pull straight up with steady pressure to avoid leaving mouthparts behind. Never twist, squeeze the body, or use petroleum jelly.

If you find a tick attached to your dog, follow these simple steps. When in doubt, call your veterinarian!

1. Prep the Area - Put on disposable gloves and gently part your dog’s fur around the tick so you have a clear view of the skin.

2. Grasp the Tick - Place your fine-tipped tweezers or tick hook directly against the dog's skin, clamping onto the tick’s head or mouthparts. Avoid squeezing the tick's swollen body, as this can force infectious fluids back into your dog.

3. Pull Straight Up - Pull straight upward with slow, steady, even pressure. Do not twist or jerk the tick, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off in the skin.

4. Dispose of the Tick - Drop the tick into a sealed container or a jar of rubbing alcohol to kill it. Never crush a tick with your bare fingers.

5. Disinfect and Monitor - Clean the bite site and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. If parts of the tick get stuck in your dog's skin, talk to your vet!

IT'S SO HOT OUT THERE! Complaining about the weather is a Chicagoland pastime! We made it through the winter and now the temperature is rising!

Heat is not the only challenge summertime brings to dog owners. Check out this helpful graphic from the ASPCA about keeping your pup safe during the dog days.

REMEMBER - there is no such thing as a safe amount of time to keep your dog in a car without air conditioning!

Join Angie Pawinski and tackle two of agilities most technical obstacles!

This dynamic 4-week mini-class is ideal for new teams and young dogs beginning their agility journey. Each engaging 2-hour session is dedicated to building foundational skills and confidence on two of agility’s most technical obstacles: weave poles and the teeter.

Using a structured, step-by-step approach, each obstacle is broken down into clear, achievable components. Dogs will develop an understanding of proper weave pole entries using the two-by-two method, while also gaining confidence and comfort with the motion and sound of the teeter (set at its lowest height) through positive, progressive training techniques.

Handlers have the flexibility in each session to concentrate exclusively on weave poles, the teeter, or to divide their time between both obstacles, allowing for a customized learning experience tailored to each team’s goals.

Prerequisite: Dogs must have completed a pre-agility class and/or be currently enrolled in an agility program.

This week's Team Member Spotlight is on our office manager, Noel Dagley!

Dogs have played a role in Noel's life for many years, and she feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a field she loves. Noel started working at For Your K9 in 2011 and loves meeting people who love their dogs as much as she does. She really enjoys helping people form a close bond with their best friend!

Noel has lived with Siberian Huskies since 1997, and dogs have always been a huge part of her life. She has learned a lot from each of her dogs, the majority of which were rescued, and continues to train, compete and title in obedience, agility, rally, flyball, barn hunt, FastCAT and nose work. Many of her huskies have been trained and certified therapy and crisis response dogs. She enjoys hiking/packing with them and in the colder months dog sledding (her dogs' favorite pastime).

In addition to working at For Your K9, Noel has volunteered with Adopt A Husky since 2000 and currently serves as a Board Member and Fundraiser Coordinator for the organization. Her pack currently includes her husband Mike and three huskies Gunner, Spirit and Luke.

This week's Team Member Spotlight is on Joyce Pedicini!

Joyce is a canine conditioning specialist who teaches and holds workshops at For Your K9. Helping people and their dogs learn how to live happy, healthy and long lives together is her favorite part of working, in addition to watching owners bond with their pups.

A vet-tech for over 30 years (most of which have been in emergency room medicine), Joyce is certified in Canine Massage and enjoys training her own two dogs, American Pit Bull Terrier Pauly and Jack Russel Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog Howie, in Barn Hunt, Agility and Dock Diving.

In her spare time, Joyce usually finds herself at dog-related activities such as training sessions, trials and meets. She enjoys spending time with her family, which now includes three grandchildren, at their Wisconsin cabin.
