Agreed! It is also one of the toughest things to teach!

The older I get, the more convinced I am that the difference between good and great usually isn’t talent.

It isn’t money.
It isn’t politics.
It isn’t luck.

It’s effort. It's try.

I see it every weekend—at horse shows, dance competitions, track meets, and in so many other arenas. The athletes and competitors who keep showing up, who practice when no one is watching, who stay after to fix the little things, who get back up after disappointment… those are the ones who keep improving.

Talent might get you started.
Effort is what carries you the rest of the way.

So if you’re feeling discouraged because someone seems more gifted or further ahead, don’t quit. Keep putting in the work. Progress isn’t always loud, and it isn’t always immediate, but it is happening.

For those of us coaching, judging, teaching, and standing in the trenches with you—we see the effort. We notice the extra lap, the extra practice, the improved attitude, the determination after a tough day.

And we’re incredibly proud of you.
