It has been such a blessing to make the Farmstead our life’s work—

first with the livestock and taking in unwanted dogs through the years, and now with our Aussies and Aussiedoodles that we get to raise and share with all of you ❤️

My 8-to-5 — more like my 24/7 — has been right here at home with our animals for more than 20 years. And now, these days, my husband Paul is home four days a week too, working his way toward full retirement soon. What has always been my everyday life is becoming more and more something we get to do more of together.

Our days revolve around the animals. Feeding, cleaning, puppies, grown dogs, vet trips, chores around the Farmstead—and all those ordinary little moments in between that give meaning to it all. And moreso, I’ve never been one to need a “vacation” from home. That’s a good thing because, when life revolves around animals, there really isn’t much time for getting away.

Many of our years here have been sharing our animals for petting zoo events... live nativities, Easter-Fall-Christmas happenings with all the wonderful adventures and friendships that came with it. It was a special chapter of our lives and one that gave us so many memories.

While that chapter has closed, our center hasn't. Days remain full with caring for our dogs and livestock, raising our puppies, and simply enjoying the Farmstead.

It’s a busy life -- definitely a 365-days-a-year one -- but this little Farmstead has given me a life’s work that I love—and now I get to share a little piece of it with every family who takes one of our puppies home ❤️

And, speaking of puppies, this little pumpkin pictured below is looking for a life to share with someone special...

Sometimes life with animals gets very real, very quickly.

Last night we were up late working on our new whelping kennel. Around midnight, I started putting everyone up for the night and realized Gianni wasn't coming.

We have several doghouses tucked into shaded areas where the dogs can go when they want some quiet time. I noticed another Aussie, Ava, nuzzling something in one of the doghouses, and there was Gianni looking back at me.

When I picked her up, my heart sank.

Her entire back end was covered in blood and one little foot was dangling. Once I rinsed away enough blood to see what had happened, it was obvious she had suffered a terrible injury to the back of her leg and her foot was no longer functioning normally.

But by then, there was no active bleeding.

There had been no dog fight—we've never had one... our dogs get along great. We do have construction supplies around while we're adding onto the kennel, so we walked everything trying to figure out what could possibly have happened. Nothing we found seemed feasible.

But something got that foot, whether we can make sense of how it happened or not.

I kept Gianni quiet and stayed up with her through the night, watching closely and worried the bleeding might start again. She remained comfortable, alert and stable with no further bleeding. Had that changed, we would have headed straight for emergency care. At 4:30 this morning, we headed to our vet so we could be high on the walk-in list.

She was still comfortable and alert while we waited—even wagging her tail.

When they called us back, I carried her from the van, along the sidewalk, through the waiting room and down the hallway to an exam room.

I didn't realize anything had changed until I walked into that room.

Suddenly there was blood spraying everywhere.

It was on me. It was through the hallway. It was through the waiting room. There was a trail all the way back outside to the van.

The vet walked in, saw what was happening, picked her up and immediately headed for surgery.

And I stood there crying, covered in blood, trying to tell everyone I needed a mop. 😭

Looking back now, one thought keeps coming to me:

Of all the moments that bleeding could have started again, it happened after they had called us back.

Not overnight.

Not during the drive.

Not sitting in the parking lot.

She was already inside the veterinary clinic, in my arms, with her vet only feet away.

And he immediately moved into action.

Gianni came through surgery beautifully. ❤️ Her Achilles tendon was severed, but our vet was able to repair it and said there was plenty of good tissue to work with. He is very optimistic and told me he hasn't had one yet that didn't heal back to normal.

She'll be splinted for the next few weeks, and they'll be keeping a close eye on her through next week before she can come home.

Today, I'm tired. I'm still shaken. And I'm incredibly thankful.

Thankful she was calm and alert for all those hours between finding her and getting to the vet. Even wagging her tail.

Thankful the wound held, somehow, until we were headed into that exam room.

And especially thankful for a veterinarian who saw an emergency and didn't hesitate for one second.

Farm life isn't always puppies, pretty pictures and happy announcements.

Sometimes it's blood, tears, a mop...with an awful lot of prayer and gratitude through the tears. ❤️

I heard there are Aussie breeders jumping ship to breed Dachshunds...

I absolutely love Dachshunds and shared life with two for 14 & 15 years. I miss them dearly 😞

Dachshunds are hysterical, devoted little personalities—but a whole herd of them? Dear Lord 😂 Independent thinkers with selective hearing and a surprisingly enthusiastic interest in taking out anything unfortunate enough to be smaller than they are. But I don't believe anyone could know a Dachshund without loving them to the moon and back.

And the tiny Chihuahua. My little guy Marbles passed away this year and left a huge hole in our hearts. But that little guy kept me gray-haired from looking for him all the time on our farm—only to find him standing right at my feet.

And then there are the hawks 😳 I was nervous enough keeping track of ONE little midget with those things circling overhead. I can't imagine having a whole herd of tiny dogs and spending my nights dreaming they're being picked off one by one 🤦‍♀️ I don't have to worry about that now and it breaks my heart... we terribly miss all the good we had with them and would happily take back the not-so-good just to still be with them.

Last here, but never least, our Shih Tzus, Hercules and Sadie. Absolutely adorable and wonderful little house companions. My life has been so full with my Hercules, who is now 15 years old. Demanding little guy who despises being groomed, but who melts me with that teddy bear face and huge chocolate eyes. My Hercules, my heart! And now little Sadie keeping his days a bit younger and sweeter. And, though they have my heart, that doesn't automatically translate into let's breed Shih Tzus. They're kinda just meant for me ❤️

Then there's the Aussie.

✔️ Big enough to locate visually. 😂
✔️ Smart enough to understand what you're doing.
✔️ Attentive enough to care what you're doing.
✔️ Loyal enough to want to do it with you.
✔️ Athletic enough for farm life and on-the-go life.
✔️ Adaptable enough to come inside afterward and settle.
✔️ Most loving heart with no end in sight.

And that's where I've landed.

There are so many wonderful breeds, and I've been blessed to love several of them. But Australian Shepherds are the dogs I want to share with you. I love the way they watch us, follow us, learn our routines, join whatever we're doing and somehow seem to believe that wherever their people are is exactly where they belong.

❤️I love how when I'm outside the gate, they are lined along it happily awaiting my return.
❤️I love their attentive, happy eyes. And that smile!
❤️I love their enthusiasm.
❤️I love how they live daily with their whole heart.
❤️I love how their entire goal is to be connected with their person.
❤️I love how they know my voice and can't wait to hear it.
❤️I love how if you ever need to know you are loved an Aussie will do back flips to let you know YOU ARE.

Then, the Aussiedoodle complements it all with the wonderful and expressively added intelligence and affection of the Poodle giving life a whole new different and warm experience. The Poodles and Doodles are another expression of the qualities I love living with and want to share.

So while other breeders may decide another breed is easier to raise, easier to sell, or simply a better fit for where they want their program to go, that's great!

But, as long as God blesses me with the ability to wake up and care for a bunch of Aussie faces watching my every move like I'm clearly about to do something VERY important...

You will find me right here 🫶

It's about knowing your breed, loving your breed, and staying true to why you chose it—even when somebody else's grass happens to be greener for a season or two ❤️

🐾 When We Say “Our Dogs Come Back to Us”

Many responsible breeders, including us, have a lifetime return clause in their contracts.

If at any point a family can no longer keep one of our dogs, we require that they contact us and that the dog either return to us or be placed in another home with our involvement.

But there is an important second half to that clause.

It isn't only an obligation we place on our families. It is an obligation we place on ourselves.

When we contractually require a dog to come back to us, we have to be prepared to get that dog back.

Sometimes a family will happily drive the dog home. And sometimes they can't—or simply won't.

That's when our own promise gets tested.
It may mean driving several hours, meeting someone halfway, arranging transportation, or, yes, assuming the transportation expense ourselves to get our dog safely back into our care.

Do we necessarily love that part? Of course not.
But we brought this dog into the world. We chose the breeding. We welcomed that puppy into our hands. We chose the family who took that puppy home. And when we wrote into our contract that the dog must come back to us if that family could no longer keep them, we accepted the responsibility that comes with those words.

And when one of our families calls us to say they can no longer keep their dog, we want that call.

There is ❌️no judgment ❌️no embarrassment ❌n️o public shaming.

Life happened.

Okay. Let's talk. How do we get our dog back to us?

Maybe the dog comes directly home. Maybe we help arrange transportation. Or perhaps together we determine that the best solution is placing the dog directly with another carefully selected family, allowing us to know exactly where our dog is and continue that relationship throughout the dog's life.

The goal isn't to determine who deserves blame.

The goal is to take care of the dog.

Because a lifetime return clause isn't simply protection written into a sales contract.

‼️It's a lifetime promise to the puppy made by their breeder‼️

And to all of our families who have loved and cared for the dogs that began their lives with us—thank you. ❤️ And to those who have had to make the difficult, heartbreaking decision to place one back into our care, thank you for trusting us enough to bring them home. That, too, is an act of love.
