Fearful dogs in general are going to take more time to work with in order to build their confidence. Start slow and then keep finding ways to help them overcome. Stick to this process and you will see a dog transform. If you don't hold your dog accountable to their progress, they will revert back to old ways. Invite them into more every day.

Dog training tools are designed to make the training process more efficient, and if used correctly, they should also eventually go away. Certain tools, like treats or toys, are enjoyable for the dog. Other tools, like a prong collar or an ecollar, are not enjoyable. We have to teach with the enjoyable tools, and then start to hold the dog accountable with both the enjoyable and not enjoyable tools. Using this approach we get consistent and reliable obedience under all types of distractions and then the tools fade away and we have a well balanced dog able to be obedient just for obedience sake.

Teaching your dog to sit and stay is one of the most basic and yet undermaintained dog behaviors. This simple behavior can be very powerful when needed. Your dog should have the ability to sit and stay even when highly distracted. Try this training exercise where you walk around your dog as they sit and stay. We call it the Sit-360.

If you have a dog that rushes at the front door, with the leash on, spend some time with your body language teaching your dog there is a threshold there you want them to honor. Remember to slow down and pay attention to the smaller body language communication both you and your dog are saying to each other.
