With the fair in full swing we wanted to put something together to honor the 4H & FFA kids of the past and those in the program now! These programs are very near and dear to our hearts and we are a proud sponsor!

CALLING ALL CATTLE! Valley Veterinary Hospital and Cascade East Animal Clinic now have a new and improved portable ultrasound machine for pregnancy checks! Not only is this much faster than the old school way of checking a cow for pregnancy, it also gives us information about the age of the fetus and can help aid the Doctor in determining a diagnosis when palpation alone isn't sufficient. If you have a herd that needs pregnancy checks give our office a call at (509) 925-6146. Dr. Walzer and Dr. Coates have already had success using this new piece of equipment!

We are fortunate here at Valley Vet to experience a low turn over rate; when our staff move on it's usually to bigger and better things, and we couldn't be more excited for Hannah to start her adventure at Washington State University in the Doctor of veterinary medicine program! We have been blessed to have an amazing assistant like Hannah working here since February of 2022, and from the start her drive and passion for the world of Vet med has been infectious. We have all learned from the experiences she brought from working in an emergency hospital, her compassion for all animals great and small is unmatched, and we can't wait to see what she does next. If we are really lucky she may return to us after graduation and join the amazing team of Veterinarians we have here at valley vet, but wherever she decides to go we wish her the best of luck. Thank you for all the time, dedication, and love you have brought to this practice Hannah.

It's been about 6 months since we began using Vet Triage as an extension of our after hours emergency care, so we would like to revisit the topic for anyone who is new to our clinic or has thankfully not had to use this service yet. It is free and easy to set up an account with Vet Triage, and we highly encourage all of our clients to do this BEFORE they need to use it. It can be difficult to remember passwords during the event of an emergency, so we would suggest writing down your user name and password and storing this information in a safe place. If you make an account but never end up using it, that is perfectly fine! It's better to have this ready to go and never need it than to need it and have technical issues. For the most part our clients have had positive experiences with the Vet Triage system, and please note this does not replace our after hours emergency care. Our DVM's still work on an on-call rotation with several other clinics in the valley to ensure there is care for pets with life threatening emergencies.

The fourth of July is right around the corner, and so we wanted to take this as an opportunity to remind our clients of our medication refill policy and holiday hours. Many dogs need anxiety medication to handle a day of fireworks, and in order to make sure you get your medication we just ask that all refill requests come in no later than 7/2 (Please know we are only able to prescribe medication those with an active doctor - patient relationship, meaning we will have had to have seen your dog at least once in the past year). We will be open from 8:00AM-1:00PM on 7/3 for urgent care only, and closed on July 4th. We hope everyone stays safe, hydrated, and has fun! Happy birthday America!

Most of our clients with horses will often haul in for teeth floating appointments to our office in Ellensburg, but did you know Cascade East up in Cle Elum also preforms equine dentistry? If you are still working with your horse and desensitizing them to the experience of being in a hospital setting (Walking through barn doors, standing in stocks, etc) then the outdoor setting of our Cle Elum office can be a great way to make sure your horse still receives the routine care it needs while they work on being trained up to be comfortable in a hospital setting.

Rattlesnakes do not build nests, but they will take advantage of any dark crevice they can fit themselves into... like the underside of your deck, or the bottom of your shed! It's not just hunting dogs that are at risk of encountering these snakes, many dogs that live in the city can find themselves at the business end of a rattlesnake just by trying to sniff it. We will see a few dogs every summer for rattlesnake bites, and treatment can range from antibiotics & fluid therapy, all the way to hospitalization. Since the effects of a rattlesnake bite can be mild to devastating, prevention is always at the top of our mind. The rattlesnake vaccine may not negate an emergency visit, but it will buy you and your dog more time to get to the Vet. If your dog has been bit and our office is closed, or if you aren't sure how serious the bite is please know Vet Triage is a great resource to have on hand. You can connect to them online at https://vettriage.com/cascade/ OR by calling (800) 940-1921

Heartworms are parasites that are spread by mosquitos, and all it takes is one bite from an infected mosquito for your pet to become a host to hundreds of worms. The cost of a heart worm test is $49 and preventatives options range from oral medications (many of which can combine with a flea & tick preventative!) or a long acting injectable. Preventative medicine will always be the cheapest kind you can buy as the cost for treatment and hospitalization for a heartworm positive dog can range between between $950-$1,600 for just a few days of intensive treatment. Heartworm disease is fatal if left untreated, and preventable with monthly oral prevention OR a long acting injectable treatment. If you have any plans to take your dog with you on summer vacation, please talk to your Vet about heart worm.
