Honoring the dogs of 9/11…

Every year as September 11th approaches, we remember the thousands of lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless heroes who stepped forward in the days that followed. But as people who spend our lives loving and caring for dogs, we also hold a special place in our hearts for the four-legged heroes of 9/11. šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡øšŸ¾

Hundreds of search, rescue, therapy, and support dogs worked alongside their handlers in the aftermath of the attacks. At Ground Zero, they climbed across unstable piles of debris, worked through smoke, dust, heat, and exhaustion, and searched tirelessly for signs of life. They didn’t understand the magnitude of what had happened. They only knew they had a job to do and they gave everything they had to do it.

As the days went on, their role became about more than searching. These incredible dogs brought comfort to exhausted rescue workers, grieving families, and people experiencing some of the darkest moments imaginable. Sometimes, simply having a dog nearby was a small piece of comfort in a world that suddenly felt unbearably heavy. That’s one of the incredible things about dogs. They don’t care who you are, where you come from, or what you believe. They simply show up. They trust. They love. And when we need them most, somehow they seem to know.

Today, we remember every life lost on September 11, 2001, every first responder and volunteer who answered the call, and every four-legged hero who stood beside them.

May the dogs of 9/11 remind us to face darkness with courage, heartbreak with love, and whatever mountains lie ahead of us one step — or one paw — at a time. ā¤ļøšŸ¤šŸ’™šŸ¾

Forever heroes. Forever remembered.

🐾 IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE GROOM. 🐾

When you walk into a grooming salon, you see the beautiful finished groom. What you don’t always see is everything that happens between the dogs and throughout the day to keep our salon clean, safe, and running properly.

Professional grooming is about so much more than shampoo, scissors, and a pretty haircut.

🧼 THE SHOP
Our salon is cleaned and scrubbed every single day. Hair, dirt, dander, and debris are continuously removed so we can maintain a clean environment throughout the day.

🧓 THE EQUIPMENT
Our grooming equipment is sanitized after every groom. Clippers, blades, tools, tables, and other commonly used equipment are cleaned between pets to help prevent the spread of dirt and contaminants from one dog to another.

šŸ› THE BATHING AREAS
Our tubs and bathing areas are cleaned regularly throughout the day. Every dog deserves a clean space when they come in for their bath.

šŸ  THE CRATES
Crates are sanitized after every groom. We don’t simply put the next dog into the same space without cleaning it first.

🐾 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Because your dog isn’t just getting a haircut.

They’re spending hours in our care, sharing an environment with other dogs, and coming into contact with equipment, tables, tubs, floors, and crates.

That’s why cleanliness and sanitation are a huge part of professional grooming.

The haircut may be what you notice when you pick up your dog.

But behind that haircut is a whole process of cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, preparing, monitoring, and caring that happens all day long.

We don’t clean because someone is watching.

We clean because your dogs are worth it. ā¤ļø

And that is one of the many things that goes into providing the level of care we believe every pet deserves.

As we wrap up another week, we just want to take a moment to talk about what it really takes to run a successful grooming salon.

Yes, it takes hard work, long days, patience, dedication, and a whole lot of love for the dogs in our care. But more than anything, it takes you—the incredible clients who love their dogs and choose us to care for them.

We truly thank God every day for all of you. Over the years, you have become so much more than clients. You have become a second family, and we feel incredibly blessed that you trust us with your precious pets. We never take that trust for granted, because we know what an honor it is to care for the dogs you love so deeply.

We will be back Tuesday, and we can’t wait to see everyone! šŸ¾ā¤ļø

Until then, we’ll continue posting shop information and updates so you can stay informed about our progress.

Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we couldn’t do this without all of you.

We hope everyone has a safe, relaxing, and blessed weekend. Thank you for being part of our salon family. ā¤ļøšŸ¶

šŸ› What Really Happens During Your Dog’s Bath? 🐾

A great groom starts long before the haircut! At our salon, the bathing process is an important part of making sure your fur baby not only looks amazing but also feels their very best.

✨ First comes the body check.
Before we begin bathing, your dog is carefully checked from head to tail. We look at the skin and coat and check for any lumps, bumps, irritations, or sensitive areas that could potentially be aggravated during the grooming process. We also evaluate the overall condition of the coat so we know exactly what your dog needs.

🧓 Then we customize their bath.
Not every dog needs the same shampoo! Based on your dog’s individual skin and coat needs, we select and mix products specifically for them.

🚿 Now it’s bath time!
Every dog is shampooed and rinsed twice. The first wash helps remove dirt, oils, and buildup. The second wash allows the shampoo to truly do its job and gives us the cleanest canvas possible for the grooming process.

A properly cleaned coat is one of the keys to achieving that beautiful, soft, fluffy finish we all love! āœ‚ļøšŸ©

šŸ’§ Conditioning is customized too.
Depending on your dog’s coat type and condition, conditioner may also be applied as a multi-step process. Some coats need a little extra moisture, while others require products designed to support volume, texture, or overall coat health.

🐾 Small salon, professional-quality products.
While we may be a small grooming salon, we invest in the same high-quality professional products used by many high-volume grooming facilities. We believe the products we use matter, especially when it comes to your dog’s skin and coat.

We carefully choose what we use because if we wouldn’t feel comfortable using it on our own dogs, we wouldn’t use it on your baby. ā¤ļø

The bath isn’t just a step before the haircut—it’s the foundation of the entire groom. A clean, properly prepared coat helps us create the beautiful finish your fur baby deserves! 🐶✨

A puppy’s first grooming experiences can help shape how they feel about grooming for the rest of their life. Everything in a grooming salon is new to them—the sounds of dryers and clippers, unfamiliar smells, new people, being handled, and the overall routine and rhythm of the salon. All of this takes time to learn.

That’s why we believe in introducing puppies to grooming slowly, patiently, and positively. We offer puppy grooms and complimentary drop-off visits to help your puppy become familiar and comfortable with the salon environment and the grooming process. These visits allow them to build confidence, learn that the salon is a safe place, and develop trust with their groomer.

Trust is the key to a lifelong positive grooming experience.

We understand that you want your puppy to look their very best, and eventually, they will! However, achieving the perfect haircut takes time, patience, practice, and a puppy who feels comfortable and confident throughout the process.

Our goal is never to rush your puppy or overwhelm them simply to achieve a certain look in one appointment. We would rather take the time to build a trusting relationship and create positive experiences that will benefit them for years to come.

With patience, consistency, and teamwork between you, your puppy, and your groomer, we can help set the foundation for a happy, confident dog who feels safe and comfortable coming to the salon for a lifetime. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Our Daily Grooming Process

8:00 AM–11:00 AM: Check-Ins, Bathing, Prep, Drying & Supervised Play

The first part of our day, from 8:00 AM until approximately 11:00 AM, is one of the busiest and most important parts of our grooming schedule.

During this time, we are focused on checking in appointments, bathing, prepping, and drying dogs. Before a dog can receive their haircut or finishing groom, they must first be properly bathed, prepared, and completely dried. This is an essential part of the grooming process and helps ensure that every dog can be groomed safely and properly.

Tessa and I work as a team throughout the morning. While one of us is bathing and preparing dogs, the other is monitoring the dogs in our care, checking in arriving customers, answering questions, and making sure everyone is safely settled. We take turns with these responsibilities throughout the morning so that every dog receives the attention and supervision they need.

Our Approach to Playtime

Our supervised playtime was not something we introduced without careful thought and preparation. We worked with several dog trainers and spent time learning about dog behavior, body language, social dynamics, and how dogs interact with one another so that we could create the safest environment possible.

Not every dog participates in playtime. Dogs are carefully observed, and only dogs that are comfortable, social, and appropriate for interaction are allowed to play together. Safety and temperament always come first.

We also try to schedule many of our regular dogs alongside dogs they already know and are comfortable with. Over time, many of these dogs become familiar with one another and develop genuine bonds and friendships. For some of our dogs, coming to the salon means not only getting groomed, but also seeing their familiar canine friends.

After five years of operating with this approach, we have never had a dog fight in our salon. We believe that this comes from careful supervision, understanding dog behavior, knowing the individual dogs in our care, and being thoughtful about which dogs are appropriate to interact with one another.

Playtime is always supervised and managed based on the individual dogs present that day. We continually monitor behavior and make adjustments whenever necessary because the safety and comfort of every dog will always be our priority.

The Second Part of the Day: Haircuts & Finishing

Once the morning check-ins, bathing, prep, and drying process is complete, we move into the second part of our day: completing the grooming and haircutting portion of each dog’s appointment. I hope these post are helpful to our clients in seeing how their babies move throughout the day and the process. Transparency and communication is essential to the quality of care we provide. As always Tessa and I are so blessed it’s not just our business it’s had truly become our second familyā€¦šŸ’•šŸ’•šŸ’•šŸ’•šŸ’•šŸ’•

A Day in the Life of a Dog Grooming Shop

Many people see a grooming appointment as similar to a hair appointment: you drop your dog off at a certain time and expect them to be finished at a specific time. The reality is that a dog grooming salon is much more unpredictable.

Every day, we work with living animals, and no two dogs—or grooming appointments—are exactly alike.

A typical day may include dogs arriving throughout the morning, dogs being bathed and dried, others waiting for their turn, dogs needing haircuts, nail trims, brushing, or special attention. Some dogs are nervous or fearful and need extra time and patience. Others may be elderly, have difficulty standing, become tired, or simply need breaks during their groom.

A dog may arrive with more matting, shedding, or undercoat than expected. A dog may have an upset stomach, become anxious, need a potty break, or require additional handling for their comfort and safety. Sometimes a groom that normally takes two hours may take much longer—and there is no way to predict every situation before the dog arrives and the groom begins.

There are also things happening throughout the day that clients may not see. Groomers are monitoring dogs while they are bathing or drying, safely moving dogs in and out of kennels, cleaning and sanitizing between appointments, answering necessary questions, handling unexpected situations, and making sure every dog in our care is safe and comfortable.

For this reason, an exact timeline cannot always be placed on a groom.

Giving an exact pickup time can create unnecessary pressure on the groomer. Grooming is not an assembly line, and rushing a groom to meet a deadline can compromise the quality of the work, the dog’s comfort, and most importantly, safety.

We understand that your time is valuable, and we do our best to provide an estimated timeframe whenever possible. However, an estimate is not a guarantee. Each dog is an individual, and their needs must come first.

When your dog’s groom is complete and they are ready to go home, we will contact you.

Our priority is never simply to get dogs finished as quickly as possible. Our priority is to make sure that every dog receives the time, patience, care, and attention they need.

Because when working with animals, safety and quality must always come before the clock. It takes a village to keep our shop safe. As always we love and appreciate each and everyone. We want to continue to make the shop a fun and pleasant experience for everyone. We know there’s no place like home but we strive to make wagg n tails the second best place for the babies.

For the Safety of Our Dogs, Staff, and Clients

We kindly ask that all clients wait to be called before entering the grooming area.

While we love seeing our clients and their pets, unexpected interruptions can create serious safety risks. During the grooming process, our groomers may be working with sharp scissors, clippers, dryers, grooming tables, or other equipment while handling dogs that may be nervous, moving, or unpredictable.

When someone enters unexpectedly or interrupts a groomer, even for just a moment, it can distract their attention at a critical time. A sudden distraction can cause a dog to move unexpectedly and could potentially result in an injury to the dog or the groomer.

In addition, seeing their owner unexpectedly can cause some dogs to become overly excited, anxious, or attempt to jump off the grooming table. This can make it difficult and unsafe for the groomer to maintain control of the dog.

For these reasons, we ask that you please wait for a call for pickup

This policy is not meant to be unfriendly or inconvenient. It is in place because the safety and well-being of every dog in our care is our highest priority.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, calm, and professional environment for everyone.
