Dandelion’s start to life was nothing short of depressing. Her “home” was a tiny cage full of straw. She sat on the list of dogs needing transport for months before finally, her time had arrived. Dandelion made the long trip up from Kentucky in the back of a transport van with chaotic sounds all around her. She arrived to Heartland a shaky mess, vomiting from stress and fear, smelling like she had never had a bath, skin and bones. A wonderful family decided to take her in as a foster and show her what love was.
Dandelion was understandably weary of her new surroundings and stayed shut down for quite some time before allowing her true colors to shine. She has grown in every way possible in the 50+ days she has been in a foster home. She is so incredibly deserving of a wonderful, happy life and we can’t wait to see her start it. This girl is a shepherd mix, roughly 8.5 months old and the sweetest, most loving soul you will ever meet. She is comfortable with other dogs and kids. Dandelion is ready to find her forever, all she needs is someone to take a chance on her.

Fireworks, cookouts, family gatherings... the Fourth of July can be a lot of fun for people, but it can also be one of the most dangerous times of the year for pets.

Every year, shelters see an increase in lost pets after fireworks scare them or they slip out during holiday parties.

Before the festivities begin, make sure your pet:
🐾 Has a properly fitting collar
🐾 Has current ID tags (or write your phone number on the collar with a Sharpie!)
🐾 Is microchipped and your contact information is up to date
🐾 Has a safe, secure place to stay during fireworks and parties
🐾 Stays away from dangerous holiday foods

This happy boy is Peter and he's looking for an immediate home. He is 2-3 years old and is a resident at the LaPorte Animal Humane Society. He has a lot of energy but is a fun, smart dog. He has lived with a male dog in the past. He is slightly shy at first meetings but warm up quickly as trust develops. The LaPorte shelter is challenged for space and really needs assistance to save this fellow. If you can help and would like to meet Peter, please call Amy at 219-608-9941.
