Did you know? Breeding season preparation starts long before the first breeding date! 🐴

S***m collected during breeding season began developing weeks earlier.
Fall is a great time for stallion collection training, semen evaluation, and testing how semen tolerates cooling or freezing. At Anoka Equine, we recommend waiting until stallions are at least 3 years old to begin collection, with readiness assessed individually.

Mares intended for early breeding in Minnesota need a head start.
Mares are seasonal breeders, and artificial lighting programs generally need to begin 60–90 days before the desired breeding date. Planning for February? Discuss a November or December start with your veterinarian.

Body condition and reproductive health take time to improve.
Mares entering breeding season too thin may have lower conception rates. Reviewing body condition, nutrition, and reproductive history this fall allows time to address concerns—especially for older mares, first-time broodmares, or mares with previous pregnancy loss.

October is the right time to build your early 2027 breeding plan!

•October–November: Schedule reproductive evaluations, assess nutrition and body condition, and arrange stallion testing.
•November–December: Begin your mare’s lighting program based on your target breeding date.
• January: Finalize breeding contracts and coordinate cooled or frozen semen arrangements.

Vaccines available include CORE, EWTWN, Flu/Rhino, Potomac Horse Fever, Rabies and Strep equi, commonly known as Strangles.
Your dental coupon includes a waived office call fee when performed at our clinic, plus 10% savings on dental float services and sedation when completed by December 31, 2026.
Multiple horses are welcome!
📞 Appointments are required. Call our office to reserve your spot. Appointments are available on a first come, first served basis, and arrival times will be assigned based on clinic needs and client demand.
When you arrive, simply pull up to our front gate and a member of our team will greet you outside.
Please note that vaccines and complimentary dental checks are the only veterinary services being provided during Vaccine Clinic hours. All services must be paid in full at the time of service.

🍂 **Fall Preventative Care Days are coming!** 🐴

A little planning this fall can help set your horse up for a healthy season ahead.

During Anoka Equine’s Fall Preventative Care Days, our veterinarians will focus appointments within specific geographic areas. Coordinating visits this way helps reduce travel costs, allows us to pass those savings on to you, and brings quality preventative care right to your farm.

Depending on your horse’s individual needs, your visit can include vaccinations, f***l egg counts, Coggins testing, dental care, sheath cleaning, and personalized veterinary recommendations.

We also value the opportunity to see your horse in their home environment. It gives our team another perspective on their management, surroundings, and individual needs while giving you time to ask questions and plan for their continued care.

Wildfire Smoke & Your Horse’s Health
With record-setting poor air quality in Minnesota, many horse owners are wondering how wildfire smoke may affect their horses. Just like people, horses can experience respiratory irritation from smoke, and those with heaves (equine asthma) are especially at risk for flare-ups.

Here are a few ways to help protect your horse:
-Keep fresh water available close to where your horse eats. Horses drink most of their water within two hours of eating hay, and staying well hydrated helps keep the airways moist and facilitates clearance of inhaled particulate matter.
-Limit or avoid exercise when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is high or smoke is visible.
-Feed dust-free hay to reduce additional airway irritation. Soaking or steaming hay can help with dust.
-Provide a well-ventilated, shaded environment, whether your horse is housed indoors or outdoors.

If your horse develops a cough, has difficulty breathing, please contact our office at 763-441-3797 to speak with your veterinarian or schedule an examination. Horses with heaves are at greater risk for secondary complications, including bacterial pneumonia.

Stay safe, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns about your horse during periods of poor air quality.

🌞 Help Your Horse Beat the Heat! 🐴

With high temperatures and humidity in the forecast, now is the time to help your horse stay safe and comfortable. The two biggest concerns during extreme heat are dehydration and overheating.

💧 Keep your horse hydrated
• Make sure clean, cool, fresh water is always available and easy to access.
• Adding a small amount of non iodized salt to your horse's grain, as directed by your veterinarian, or using electrolytes when appropriate can encourage drinking.
• If your horse seems reluctant to drink, try flavoring a separate bucket of water with a little applesauce, molasses, or soaked senior feed. Always offer plain fresh water as well.

🌳 Prevent overheating
• Provide plenty of shade and good airflow.
• Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
• If your horse appears overheated, move them into the shade, use fans if available, and cold hose the horse, especially along the neck, behind the forearms, and in the groin. Continue cooling until your horse's temperature returns to normal.

⚠️ Call your veterinarian immediately if your horse shows:
• Severe lethargy
• Difficulty breathing
• Signs of colic
• A persistently elevated temperature
• No improvement after cooling measures

Most horses handle hot weather well with proper management, but it is always better to be proactive. If you have questions or your horse needs emergency care, we are here to help.
